I don't know if it's true or not but I heard MLP failed pretty hard in Japan.

Disney cartoons, film or TV, are pretty popular in Japan as a general rule.

I remember when a Japanese woman was going to leave her husband for not liking Frozen.

>leaving somebody for not liking a bad movie
Japan has awful taste.

huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/05/frozen-divorce-_n_5453809.html

This, just look up Frozen on pixiv

pixiv.net/search.php?word=怪奇ゾーングラビティフォールズ

There's also a fair bit of fan stuff (doujin, fan art, fan fiction) for the other Disney tv cartoons like SvtFoE and WOY to a lesser extent but I also saw a lot for Steven Universe (no surprise I guess, it's heavily influenced by anime) and Adventure Time. There's also a lot of fan merchandise for these shows.

Not a surprise, nips love white people after all.

...

Certain things get huge.

I like seeing the particular characters and even ships that exploded over there.

My understanding is the ponys dident do to well but equestria girls somehow got popular

I forget do Russian children like ponys or is it just the porn that's popular there

they have a bit of a fandom for western cartoons but it seems fairly small

Russians are having an economic downturn. Childrens toys are their smallest concern right now.

Poor Russia

Look at the doujinshi based on Western stuff sometime, it's pretty interesting.

They like brown if the story is good and the character is well written.

They upgraded Marie's cuteness to dangerous levels.

MLP can't compete with pretty cure, EQG only managed to get some traction because of netflix and the characters resembled human girls

Cartoons have a niche fanbase. South Park, Regular Show and the like get subbed.

(Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series also gets subbed.)

What nips really LOVE is Hollywood.

24, Battlestar Galactica (for SF nerds), Star Wars, more cop shows, all that shit they import and watch.

>pretty cure
Oh this looks interesting

>MLP
>A super meta troll by Sup Forums for autists
>Catches on outside of Sup Forums
>Nation wide beta autists somehow get in the net too

Have you ever told a kid you don't like that retarded thing is actually really enjoyable, then he ends up liking retarded thing? It was like that.

Nips were obviously thinking those ponies were a shameful dispray.

That's the girliest doujin cover I've seen in a while

...

>he actually believes that Sup Forums spread mlp to Sup Forums
>not Sup Forums or Sup Forums for the sake of shitposting
If anything else Sup Forums ended up more autistic than the ones who enjoyed mlp because they couldn't handle it

...

...

...

...

Pretty sure Hasbro spread mlp to japan in the failed hopes of making more money.

...

this kills the thread

So Sup Forums gets blamed for other boards autistic antics again?

The thing that always me a chuckle is that although we are largly responsible for mlp having such a large adult audience we auctualy avoided the worst of the autism there's little on /mlp/ that cringy

We released a horror on the world and got away pretty much Scot free

I'm pretty sure we are talking about children here user you know the target and largest audience

nah, mod and janitor culture got pretty fucked up and introduced the whole 'Sup Forums is a serious board for serious art' attitude.

Every board tries to blame it on other boards instead of there own.
In truth it was probably a mix of each of them.

Ok yeah your right Sup Forums was damaged by the whole shitstorm

But the auctual autism from pony fans doesent show up on Sup Forums much (well it does but /mlp/ is mostly standard Sup Forums level autism) (although sometimes I think I would prefer that to barneyfag)

I've heard about Barneyfag a lot but I've never seen him.

God fucking dammit user we could be looking at Elsanna doujinshi RIGHT NOW and you have to bring this cancer here to ruin things instead. That didn't even catch on there like the other things in the thread did.

>Complains about cancer
>Posts cancer

How many of you actually were here in 2010/2011 when MLP started.
Not very many judging from how badly history seems to have distorted itself.

Suffice to say there was never any problems with /mlpg/ the first and only legitimate Sup Forums mlp general thread there ever was. All problems were either caused by outside spammers (Sup Forumstards) or butthurt shitposters who couldn't deal with the fact that the new MLP show was actually good or that adult men watched it.

What did Sup Forums get out of it at the end of the day? An arbitrary global rule, a useless new board, /trash/ becoming Sup Forums 2.0 and a ton of butthurt on all sides. Totally worth it.

At least it's a cancer Japan got behind.

sauce

People really overreact to MLP and I don't think it should be treated differently than anything else.

>/trash/
>Sup Forums 2.0

more like /furhg/

Post westaboo fan art if you have it.

I've been here since 2008 and I never said that /mlpg/ was the problem. Just that it set off or came at about the same time a lot of things that made Sup Forums less fun then it was.

g.e-hentai.org/g/920347/58d8389352/

None of us were claiming that the ponyfags themselves were the problem user anybody who still thinks that is clearly an idiot to the point they probably can't put together a sentence anyway

So Sup Forums 2.0

Your in for a treat when you do
His sperging is entairtaining for a while until it just gets pathetic.

Haven't seen him in a few days though

Funny, I saw him today.

I'd hate to have the level of autism he has.

>no search results
>instead just a gif of a hentai anime I watched earlier today

Use saucenao. If it;s even from Pixiv, it'll find it.

I speak a bit of the moonrunes and when I was practicing back in the day, made a friend who livestreamed herself drawing on NicoNico. We would talk in Japanese text via Skype. She really liked a lot of western cartoons growing up and was especially fond of Foster's Home. Most Cartoon Network stuff gets dubbed there, if I remember. There's Japanese Adventure Time, EE&E, PPG, SU, and I'm sure there's a bit more. Some of the episodes are up for free on the Japanese CN youtube channel.

I don't know exactly how popular they are. I would hazard a guess that they aren't as popular there, in general, as anime is here. Maybe Disney stuff like Frozen is, but I don't think there's as many Western cartoon Westaboos running around glorious nippon as there are animu weebs in the Occident.

MLP is the American equivalent of moe, so ofcourse it failed in Japan. Another cute girly show is just a drop in the barrel over there. The Otaku have Idolm@ster and Precure, what do they care about MLP?

What made Sup Forums less fun was the surge of "I don't like it hence it doesn't belong on Sup Forums" and general threads, both arguably do to MLP legitimately triggering people because before FiM MLP had always been worse than sonic when it came to creepy and autistic fandoms. Scrolling to the first page of MLP porn on paheal is a good way to travel back in time to what was typical of the time.

This coupled with the general anti-furry sentiment that was still a thing back then caused a massive backslash and for lack of a better word empowered the shitposters who used MLP to get a rise out of people. This culminated in the site wide ban on MLP of march 2011 that only helped to stir the already overbubbling cauldron of shit. After 3 days of word filters and "you-know-what" threads the mods stopped the auto-banning on the terms that there can only ever be one thread on Sup Forums about MLP (MLPG) at any given time and that ponies are only allowed in it and on Sup Forums. This lasted until moot created /mlp/ when /mlpg/ was violently cast into an ocean of piss, where it still is.

nippon fan art is super cute

Aside from Disney/Pixar movies and such, it seems Western animation is insignificant there.

MLP doesn't have cute girls in it, it has ponies. Otaku couldn't care less about animal characters, and animal characters are uncommon in general in anime. Even if it had anthropomorphic ponies instead, it wouldn't make any difference. It's not made in a way that would interest otaku, and there's a reason why moe emerged in Japan and practically doesn't exist in America.

Korean fan art is cute too.

I thought moe just applied to anything cute and girly and attracted adult men?

...

>/trash/ becoming Sup Forums 2.0
Without MLP and furries, /trash/ would be the perfect board.

...

...

...

...

>without furries

Then it's just ERP: The Board.

I did, user.

...

Leave it to Huffington Post to write a whole article on a post on a Japanese message board that's probably fake, about a cartoon. What a fucking rag.

>kids and janitors really fucked up Sup Forums
>glad /trash/ barely has them
>you know what would improve it?
>mods and janitors

...

More like /cog/: Sup Forums generals.

It's a complicated concept that means different things depending on the context, but it doesn't mean adult men being attracted to cute and girly things. Moe is essentially just a feeling of infatuation or love towards fictional characters.

Japan was a mistake
Pedos were a mistake

Nothing cuter than character-themed bento boxes.

>/trash/ becoming Sup Forums 2.0

/trash/ is a way better place to discuss cartoons than Sup Forums, honestly. You can actually make decent conversation without having nazi mods or tumblr crybabies looming over you, ready to pounce and destroy your thread.

Disney stuff is huge

But things like nick and cn are very niche

How popular are Western cartoons in Russia?

Are they as popular as Russian cartoons is in the West?

Except for a handful of things like Pokemon, maybe Yugioh, I don't think anime is as big here either as Sup Forums seems to think. Most people have never heard of most series, this is just a weeb site.

I think much more popular and that Bannable Offense Tiny Horse Show and Gravity Falls are the most popular U.S. cartoons there, or that's what some Russian guy here said he could have been full of shit.

The anime fandom in the US is huge.

Hi, /sug/

Yes there are a lot of people in the anime fandom, but I wouldn't call it mainstream until you're talking about a tiny number of shows. Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z maybe.

>Most people have never heard of most series
Most people have never heard of most of the literally thousands and thousands of series that exist? No way!

Would you really argue that any anime show on right now is as mainstream as Modern Family or even The Walking Dead?

It can be huge without being mainstream. And at any rate it's massive compared to the Western animation fandom in Japan.

>Western animation fandom in Japan

Are you not counting Disney and Pixar movies there for some reason?

IIRC, in Japan, all animated media (Western, Japanese, or otherwise) is called "anime". Most of the cartoons we make skew toward younger demographics there than they do here.

As said, though, Disney is very, very popular over there.

>a Japanese woman was going to leave her husband for not liking Frozen.
That's pretty scary

I was talking about everything else. Disney movies etc. obviously are very popular there.

>IIRC, in Japan, all animated media (Western, Japanese, or otherwise) is called "anime".
What difference does that make?

I've read that the Japanese like American shows because they're usually about people with interesting and unusual professions or lifestyles, while Japanese shows tend to have everyman protagonists that get stale after a while.

/m/ loves PreCure for some reason. I guess because its akin to Toku.
