The answer is they don't.

Or rather, they have concerns outside themselves. Specifically, those who tend to vote "progressive" do not think about the consequences different actions will have given any number of future variables. Conservatives actually almost focus on the future entirely. By future I dont mean "How do I pay off this college debt in 5 years" I mean "If we give free college, education systems are free to bump up prices causing increases in taxpayer money needed, while it has been shown that most people who have access to free college dont pursue fields that have any demand whatsoever - aka a waste of the peoples money."
They would love free shit, I mean come on, everybody does. They just know that welfare states turn into crumbling shadows of the Nations they once were (Rome, and more recently, Argentina). Politicians use the free stuff line to get votes and then have to make good on it, which is fine, but nobody ever votes to lower the amount of welfare we give out when our economy starts to tank and we cant afford to prop them up. Beyond this, welfare generates a sub-culture of people who stop being productive members of their society. Instead they actually become a weight on the burdens already faced, which when times are tough, becomes unbearable to a Nation.

Why do you believe that? My tax bills are always higher when democrats are in office. I am a white male with a job so I qualify for exactly zero free money programs. Even if I lose my job for an extended period I will not be eligible for over 95% of the programs meant to help the poor.
