The cultural revolution happened and no one denies that and no one supports it either. But it didn't "destroy" Chinese culture. Do you think ten years of political upheaval just wiped out the previous 4,000 plus years? If that's the case, did May 4 1919 or the Civil War or Japanese invasion do that too? Culture doesn't just disappear especially if it's so old and burned into the psyche of hundreds of millions of people.
Because western part faces mainland China where all the people came from and the east faces nothingness.
The east has some strange Buddhist groups though in the mountains, somehwere called Hualian.

If ROC had made a move in the 70's or 80's they actually could have unified China on their terms. The military and economy were strong compared to poor mainland, and could have actually put up a fight to take back the mainland.
