Should I watch HBO Rome? I've heard mixed things.

I would not recommend it, though it's not all bad. The production values are incredible, but there are numerous contrivances, things aren't properly setup, some episodes are border on softcore porn, few memorable characters, etc. Very poor use of the source material, which were some of the most interesting times in human history.

Watch it, but don't expect absolute historical depiction, it's HBO anyway..

It was very good. Sadly, it lasted only two seasons.

augustus's life/family too, Anthony becomes a drunk fool etc.

But it follows 2 soldiers's perspective, who were historical figures actually and fought with Caesar at his gallic campaigns.

I'm not objecting to it on a historical basis, (though I'm sure there are plenty of lapses, like Cicero not delivering the Philippicae himself), but how the narrative was constructed.

I really don't remember. If you're looking to learn about history, that show probably isn't it. It' really about 60% about the personal lives of people mostly unrelated to historical events. The other parts rarely give the sense of urgency that the times must have had, if only because of all the filler.

I don't know enough about the period to say if it were accurate, only that most of the show isn't historical as much as being a high-production soap opera with gratuitous sex scenes. If you've seen other HBO historical series, it's very similar in that a large part of it is historical fiction or based on rumors. It wouldn't considerably improve the show if it were more or less accurate in terms of events, but as I said, the production values are impeccable for a television show.
