Who cares, it was built at a time whee walls were literally useless. Its would be like them making the largest usable melee weapon and someone praising them or it today, it was obsolete.

In spite of what Sup Forums will try to tell you west africa had some decently developed societies
still backward of course but you cannot deny they were a thing
benin :DD

>decently developed

pick one. You know chimpanzees use "tools" too right?
>benin
China was decently developed and still backwards.
While it might seem low to western standards, remember that Africans don't know how to operate a ladder.
some had monarchies, most of them had organized religion, they fought wars roughly on the same level as early antiquity
remember that part of west africa was muslim and even thought islam is a spawn of the devil you cannot deny that it brings a slighty degree of enlightenment to the savages
>decent
>backwards
>muh order
You still do not acknowledge your own cognitive dissonance. These people were never on level with early antiquity. You have no standards or perspective. Your minds are rotten.
They were large, but architecturally rudimentary earthen walls. They required immense investment and manpower, but almost no technological or scientific innovation - the Great Wall of China was built by carrying rocks from quarries, cutting them precisely and laying them to form an architecturally complex defensive network of walls and towers; the walls of Benin were formed by digging up mud, and piling it up as high as possible right by the site from which it was dug.
>The Benin Walls were ravaged by the British in 1897 during what has come to be called the Punitive expedition.
Fucking british why they have need to destroy
The wall at it's highest was twice a mans height. Impressive as piles of mud go, but what would it have actually stopped besides animals ? An "African warrior" would have little problem climbing or going through it, and there where no defensive positions on it.
They would have been better served by a series of mud towers of similar height. At least then they could spot the enemy coming, or shoot arrows down on them for a minute or two.
Could ninja warrior that wall easily/10
To be fair this worked for Rome for fucking ages, though the romans had thought out to make it a ramp on the inside and have the dirt dug up from the invader's side creating a much more tactical structure
>piles of mud

Sounds like someones mom got ravished by the ol' east India company.
Walls invite destruction. It's one of the earliest impulses, babies see block walls/tower, they knock it down, it's a universal emotion that sticks with people.
Right, but the Romans were also capable of building massive networks of aqueducts and bridges, sophisticated concrete and stone buildings, etc. If these walls are the crowning achievement of African civilization, then African civilization turns out to be as laughable as well all thought.
it's laughable but it wasn't people sitting in mud huts with stone tools
Slightly better than that.
