On one hand I can appriciate the level of effort put into the art and the commitment to a concept. On the other hand, I can't quite work out why this AU of all of them has the most committed fandom. Is it just the edgy, evil twins vibe is really popular with the Tumblr crowd?

I don't know if you've visited "The Internet" lately but this applies to pretty much every movie, show, book, comic, play, and so on.
At least people making art and stories are creating something. Most aren't good, but it's practice for a lot of people, and some are actually pretty good.
The alternative is having endless super-autistic screaming arguments about some minor "canon" minutiae even the creators never gave a shit about or thought through at all, or masturbating about why X was the greatest piece of art in human history/worse than Hitler excrement that has ruined society forever.

I think people just gravitate towards the porn shit but you could do more interesting things with the idea. The concept has sort of an American Horror Story feel, or maybe a little Lynch or Stephen King.
