I am curious about Hong Kong. I have been interested in visiting for a few years, and have had an interest in learning Cantonese too (I have a lot of Cantonese speaking neighbours). I just find it to be a fascinating part of the world. I am curious about insights about Hong Kong from those who live there, and just general opinions about Hong Kong and Cantonese.

it's just a big chinese city who think their english is perfect
i know they looth their mates from the mainland af
Isn't it culturally very distinct?
they have the same culture as guangdong so no, not at all
I am curious of what happened after the brits left and china took control. Do they still have economic and politic independence?
when the brits were in charge the chinese were not allowed in the bureaucracy
otherwise nothing changed
they say china is interfering but they didn't have much choice in terms of politicians before the transfer
uk saw it as a dominion and ruled it as such, democracy was used as a means to keep the natives out
heh thx
The Pikey Manchesters deliberately fucked over HK. Only poor edgelords like the UK. Do not trust Western Media because of their biased reporting on HK and China issues. In reality there are a ton of faggots trying to fan up the flames. Even the failing NY Times translated an article recently from an author who is such a spergy and spazzy autistic edgelord who is known among all in HK to be a faggot. There are a lot of ppl uncertain about the future of the city but the reality is that the technicals and financials are still really quite excellent. HK won't lose to SG anytime soon. /thread
The part that bothers me though is that, apparently, Cantonese is in decline (in some regions, Mandarin is becoming the dominant language). This is confirmed by statistics. This is indicative of the general mainlandization of Hong Kong which is, in my opinion, negative.
If you love China so much then why don't you live there?
it's the worst shithole in east asia with the gap between rich and poor also pollution but people are the nicest among chinese people
all dialects are in decline, cantonese is relatively well off
topic derailed, but are chinese in general kind to koreans?
I'm actually an international student who couldn't get into a good program back home so I have to slum it here in Canada for 4 years. I have a good job lined up when I get back so it is all nice and fine. People like me are optimistic, try doing that sometime.
Regardless, I know what kind of response you're trying to fish here, Pike. It doesn't work.
hint: when the bongs took HK, her population is 7k
Dude, it is not going to decline. Period. Cantonese is always going to be preserved bruh, you forgot about the entire region of Guangdong...the reality is that China is highly regionalistic. This kind of debate goes not only for Cantonese but also Wenzhounese, Hokkien, etc. Chinese society is basically a web of informal and exclusive groups that overlap massively. This diversity is the cruz of Chinese success. Without dialects and without one lingua franca (Beijing Mandarin) to bond them all together, China will be split off into many different factions. Without dialects, China in the context of a country in the 21st century wouldn't exist.
Hopefully, Malaysian Chinese are genocided
Yes I guess? Korea are liked because of their music and tv shows. Also I've met tons of Korean students in China, pretty shocked tbhq. I actually went to Korea during my high school days for a MUN competition and was shocked to learn that Chinese is taught there with similar importance to English...and these weren't elite private schools or anything...just middle class public regular schools..
no
Erm...why man? Not Malaysian so I don't get the rift between you too. Chinese in SEA actually got to be careful in light of the 1998 genocide. The pribumis and bumiputeras go killing and raping, they are literally subhumans...
malaysian for malaysians
heh thx leaf
> Chinese is taught there with similar importance to English
i'm even more shocked than you
koreans aren't stupid. they have the next America-sized economy right at their doorstep. of course they'll learn chinese
Should a foreigner with an interest in Hong Kong (who might live there) learn Cantonese? Many have told me that it is not worth it and that one should just learn Mandarin. I do not want this to be true, because I vastly prefer Cantonese, but I also know that Hong Kongers don't write much in Cantonese, and I don't know if I would have to learn Mandarin to be able to read anything written in Hong Kong.
It's just so funny to me how much shit you chat while sucking off our teat. Can tell I struck a nerve as well.
I went to KL over the christmas break for a working holiday. Truly shocked at how low home prices are for high end units ala new Bukit Bintang and Mont Kiara apartments. Huge apartments too. Truly appalled at the bumiputera work ethic...I don't want to be an asshole but these ppl are bumfuck lazy and are way too coddled. I recommend the Tg's restaurant in Bukit Bintang. 24 hour restaurant run by SUPER FRIENDLY indians. On a slightly related note, I really feel sorry for how indians are treated in KL..
I really hope that the Koreas reunite soon. You guys are really knocking on the door of Japan in terms of tech and financial achievement with like half the landmass. Impressive stuff.
What is a "teat"?? I don't understand chav languages pls translate
hk uses traditional
i was kidding, chinese in malaysia are just malaysians, they kill their own all the time, sure it's unlucky for the chinese there but ultimately there is nothing we can do
I don't mean traditional vs simplified, I mean written Mandarin vs written Cantonese, which are entirely different things.
what? if i'm not wrong singapore government has made great efforts to rescue chinese indonesian people who were raped and killed by indonesian rioters why are southeast asian people hating chinese people? killing chinese in indonesia was a sick movement though
>chinese indonesian people who were raped and killed by indonesian rioters
gーgib me sourse

Nuff said
written cantonese is not as different as you think
it's not something you need to "learn"
it is not different than the types of spanish in south america, what makes cantonese special is their pronounciation
LEARN BOTH. If you can learn one then you can learn the other. The reason why some westerners struggle is because they refuse to empathise by not knowing the language and being unable to relate. The number one advice I have to you is that you need to be able to empathise with locals wherever you are while not coming off as rude. You will be naturally scrutinised more. Human nature is like that. Secondly, China is still developing. I won't put it nicely, some larger parts of the country is in ruins. It sucks. But I guess if you really want to make it here, you gotta have a positive mindset, be polite and not have such thin skin. I know a french guy who was an auto racing mechanic who learned Mandarin, befriended his CEO client and is now working in real estate/property mgmt. He is even learning Canto now. TL;DR leverage your connections well and be nice to ppl and dont forget to work hard. you will then succeed and reach whatever goals you have.
work or just chilling?
work - definitely mandarin
chilling - cantonese or just english would do
HK english ability is slightly higher than japan, but nowhere near india
"Teat" means nipple, and it's not slang. Something you'd be aware of if only you weren't an ESL chink who spent too much time playing CIDF on the Internet instead of studying.
Hong Kongers believe they have the best English in the region
I don't know what CIDF...also I'm doing pretty well in school thanks. We're actually really nice ppl who are tired of some who are assholes to us. So at first glance we might seem negative.
BTW, I have the time to chat in friendly terms but no time to wage an internet war with some stranger. Wanna be friends? I hate being negative.
But the word order and vocabulary is largely different, isn't it? Written Chinese today is largely Mandarin and uses Mandarin vocabulary and word order. Reading it out loud in Cantonese sounds weird (according to my Cantonese speaking friends). Is it possible to learn Cantonese and the characters and learn to read? Because I don't really want to learn Mandarin.
So if I want to make a career in Hong Kong, I basically have to learn Mandarin?
>If you love China so much then why don't you live there?
I love China and I will move there
enjoy living in your depressing shithole while I live the high life in shenzhen desu
Learn formal Mando first. learn informal slang Mando terms second. learn informal slang Canto terms third. Learn formal Canto fourth.
>listening to the pro-independence WE WUZ BRITS
>go to not-top class food shops
>"i'll have x" in english
>cashier steps out of counter and asks you to point at what you want at the big board
pretty much
all the not-shit cantonese speaking jobs (not a lot to begin with) prioritize locals
you don't need to learn mandarin if you don't want to but mandarin is so simple it's really pointless to ignore it
cantonese doesn't have many special vocabulary by itself, and word order is not much of an issue
and you will handicap yourself because of your own preferences if you simply ignore mandarin because you don't like it
plus once you are knees deep in learning your opinions will change
that is if you get far enough
I like Mandarin, but I just don't want to have to learn the characters honestly. When I think of Cantonese, I think of a language that is basically only a spoken one anyway, so it feels like mentally aggravating. I am not a brainlet, but studying characters sucks the life out of me (I got about 300 in with Heisig)
less mentally aggravating*
simplification really is simplification
even if you don't learn it it will come to you, so just learn traditional, although i have to warn you that remembering traditional is much harder than remembering simplified
Foreigner living in HK for just over 2 weeks now, got a job offer on Friday in my field.
Ask me anything
What field? Seniority? Where are you living? Expat package?

Why are s*Ngaporeans so uncultured?
Oh wait you're from HK. Why are both s*Ngaporeans and HKs so uncultured?
Their gap between rich and poor is on top of world.
>with similar importance to English
absolutely not true
in korean public high schools you get to choose either japanese or chinese
we're taught the very basic stuff
and most of the students don't really try to even learn any of it
only some guys who are into anime learn japanese with passion
chinese? far less popular than japanese
HONG KONG IS FINISHED. CHINA WILL ANNEX THEM NEXT WEEK
>competition and was shocked to learn that Chinese is taught there with similar importance to English...and these weren't elite private schools or anything...just middle class public regular schools..
