Both children are immortal, or at least the Dragon Kid survives the first huge-ass explosion and is shown to be perfectly fine in later books.
Considering that the first thing he said is I need to Pee when he got to Fairyland, or Oh Shit just before, people were probably putting far too much thought into how the kids get their powers when they enter fairyland.
