there were still good mytho eps like redux,tempus fugit etc but there was no continuity whatsoever.

MOTW are my favorites, but a full on MOTW show would be kinda boring. The mix up is what kept the show fresh for so many seasons (and by that I mean 6. 8 was a step above 7 and seemed to be heading on the right direction, and then they decided to shove Reyes on 9 and the whole super soldier things which was a fucking trainwreck).

Mythos stopped being good after the Syndicate was finished.
Season 7 is crap, 8 picks up a bit and the mythos becomes somewhat interesting again and season 9 totally shits the bed, except for John Doe. That episode is GOAT.

I'm conflicted,they wanted to stop the show at S5 but continue it as a movie series,idk if that would've been better or not.

After season 5 the Mythos gets messy but if you're gonna keep watching, you should watch those too. Some of them have good character moments, even when the overall storyline totally jumps the shark.

IMO s8 is a small step in the right direction after a shitty season 7. Then it goes off the deep end, mostly due to forcing such a shitty character like Reyes that came out of fucking nowhere, and even worse when they shoved the romance subplot that was completely inconsistent with the characters, and didn't have any chemistry at all.
A clueless Doggett trying to keep the X-Files going with an even clueless rookie and some Scully help would've been so much greater.

Yeah, shoving Reyes really fucked up. A Doggett solo with guest appearences from Mulder and Scully, and the eventual introduction of a new character would've been great, but they tried to forced the male/female thing and even rush the romance plot that took years to develop with Mulder and Scully.

And I loved the 2 Doggett/Mulder episodes we got. I wish we had more. Hopefully they'll have Robert Patrick guest starring in an episode of the new season (though I don't really have high hopes for that).

Yes season 4-6 mythos is good but gets less interesting once things start to get explained and they try to complicate them more but it had a good ending point until they decided to keep milking it in S7 onwards.

Carter could've said no.
And he wrote and directed some of the shittiest episodes after season 6, so he's got nobody to blame but himself. The dude had a great idea and a general sense of director for the first half of the show, but he got lost and had his head too far up his own ass by the end of it.

Individually or taken in two's and three's, yes. But collectively, which is how a mythos has to be considered, they were far less than the sum of their parts. A confused mess that failed to deliver on any on the potential. It didnt even have the dignity to fizzle out with a "we may never know" conclusion, it just limped along for 9 seasons and 2 movies, occasionally retconning itself or cutting plotlines short before picking up new ones. What a Mess!
