The snow is disappearing quickly and the scenery looks kinda grim again. Good thing I don't have to do stuff outside. I remember that this kind of weather was the fucking worst during conscription (new conscripts started less than 3 weeks ago) so they will be suffering a little, which is somewhat funny to me I guess. Especially if they are using the gloves that they hand out there, they are absolutely worthless in this kind of weather, they just absorb moisture like a sponge so you are left wondering whether or not you would be better off without them, either way it's very uncomfy in this kind of weather.
why does everyone in finland have to take conscription?
All males are obliged by law, you can do civilian service instead though (like work in some library or something like that, they have like one month in some facility where they learn to do some stuff regarding what they are going to do for the rest of the service, from what i've read the facility is pretty laid back). You can also go to some minimum security jail (pretty rare and they are much comfier institutions than the ones in the states, you might even get to work and get paid a little or do some other stuff there, you'll probably get to go on "vacation" from there too i'm not too sure how it works but actual criminals also get vacations from jail, not all of them of course) or get an ankle monitor for some time. Though if you are deemed unfit due to some physical or mental reason you are excused, and from what i've heard it's not that hard to get exempted from service on some nonsensene excuse. I don't remember the exact numbers but I think around 80% of guys start it and 70% of guys finish conscription, I think the drop out rate is a little over 10% generally. Girls can also do military conscription if they want to, they can quit inside a little less than 2 months (before taking the oath) and have no repercussions but after that they also are bound to finish it unless they get excused in some medical or mental way.
Also the reason behind it is that it's a cost efficient way to organize national defence. They also listed finlands relatively small population and large borders as reasons too.
thats weird
I guess it is a little unusual if you look at a global scale. I also forgot to mention that those who refuse all service and choose to go to some minimum security jail or get an ankle monitor will get no markings in their criminal records, also their punishments are roughly half a year. Civilian service lasts for around a year and military conscription can either be 165,255 or 347 days (it used to be 15 days longer but they shortened it not too long ago).
so if you don't do it you're a criminal basically
Yes, that's something that gets criticised somewhat. Those who live in åland are exempt on the grounds that åland is a demilitarised zone and for some reason jehovahs witnesses are also exempt if they are active in their congregation. Taken that no other religion gets exempt and that there are only around 18k of them in the country and they get special treatment is pretty weird, though finland isn't the only country where they get a free pass. If you do not inform anyone anything and just do not go when you should there will be no active manhunt for you (I think), at somepoint some officials might come see if you are at home and get you but if you're not around they will not actively search for you, you will however be a wanted man and the moment you deal with authorities (for example getting a passport, ticket for speeding or trying to board an airplane) you will be taken to barracks and there things will go forward. The year you turn 18 you will get summoned to an event where they tell you about your options, like what barracks, service time, civilian service if you do not want to go the military and such. There you will be given a date and order when you will start your service, you can affect when and where you will start your service to a degree but ultimately you will get ordered to go when and where if it isn't possible to go with your choices, they generally try take the wishes to account since they don't want people to get a negative view about the service from the get go. I'm not sure how it goes with civilian service but I guess you just contact their authorities and they will help sort it out.
what are you up to now ?
Nothing really, just browsing the net.
