Rio de Janeiro is not fine at all, you can't walk 200 meters without passing a dangerous spot. You can't even use google maps while walking because there's a very high chance someone will take your phone. Maybe Barra is fine if you own a car and just hop from parking lot to parking lot, but there's nothing touristy about Barra.
