So basically; with the combination of "magic" voices (and proven with Steven's mental powers, and of course the entire show having songs as one of its core themes, and Yellow Diamond having a Broadway singer as her VA), the Diamonds were able to make the corruption bomb which devolved the minds of the gems into monsters

reposting: who else here DOESN'T want jasper redemption it'd just seem too farfetchd. she fought in a significant part, if not the entirety, of the gem war, and was out for blood against steven and the gems in chille tid and super watermelon island peridot wasnt even around until after the war, and even then it took a huge chunk of season 2 for her redemption. when she encountered the gems before her capture it was always trying to retreat, not trying to kill them.
