Polls are fine as long as their methodology is sound. The problem is when a poll with an agenda tries to skew a poll in order to demoralise the "other" side. Or when your "own" side ignores how faulty their own polls are and ends up underestimating how far behind they actually are and misallocates critical resources that could have been better spent elsewhere.
