Kitchenerfag here, it's not that bad here yet. Rent is reasonable and you might be able to nab a tech job in Waterloo. The LRT project is torpedoing rental values in Downtown so if you can nab an apartment there, it'll be cheap and they can only raise the rent 3% per year here.

We don't have trains to get between them. In Ontario we've got GO busses, but they're slow af, getting from Kitchener to Toronto for instance takes the better part of 4 hours. The cities are ~120km apart. So to get anywhere in reasonable time, you HAVE to drive, it's basically a requirement.
It's much easier to live without a car in a small country like Austria. Here in Toronto it's common for people to drive 100km+ to work one way. Distances don't compare

Depending on how big your engine is you have to pay a yearly tax just to own the car, the bigger it is the higher the tax is. Like I said, I pay 1000€ a year for my diesel machine, I can't imagine what people who drive a V8 have to pay.
The saddest thing about it is that almost no money from it goes into maintaning the streets, the streets are in a horrible state, not very different from eastern european countries and there are traffic jams every day. If there's something wrong with your car you'd generally have to fix it anyway, MoT or no MoT.
Plus if you fix it and take it back within two weeks of the first test, you don't need to pay for it to be tested again.

Garages are known for fucking you over. Claiming you have rusty brake lines when they're fine for another couple years. You just end up paying for so much BS. Not that we dont.
That's where it helps to do your own repairs and know the owner of the local garage who does the MoT tests. If he told me I needed the brake pipes replacing they would need replacing. If I looked at them and they didn't, I'd tell him to fuck off and take the car elsewhere.
That's what's good about local independent garages though, I don't know how many of those you guys have left. We do have awful rip-off merchant corporate garages like Kwik-Fit who I'd never take my car to in a million years. They'll sell you a whole exhaust system when all you need is a new mounting bracket.
