Except that the Infinity Engine games had good multiplayer and people still play it on Gameranger to this day. I never play BG2 solo.

Because it was essentially a labor of love, before Bioware became a huge corporation focused on profits and pandering.
The people who worked on it wanted to make a great game, bring to life their own D&D campaigns and their put in the effort, hours and love to do it. Plus they had experience from BG1 and help for Black Isle.
The only want something like this happens again is probably from an indy game, but it will never be as successful as a modern AAA game do to indie budget limitations.
