I have a theory. (Yes, yes, I know, but bear with me.)
So, you know how Ruby and Sapphire are so thirsty for each other they can't stand to be apart for too long? And remember in Coach Steven how Sugilite refused to defuse, showing that fusions can actually wrest control of themselves from their components? Not to mention, Lapis and Jasper, despite hating each other, actually miss the time they spent fused, forced though it was?
Well, what if the reason Ruby and Sapphire hate being apart is because Garnet exists within their subconscious, and is kinda of pulling them together? Fusion has been shown to have a highly addictive element, but this isn't a mere power boost, it's a number of individuals literally melding mind and body to become a totally distinctive being. Said being may leave a part of themselves behind in their components.
So when Ruby and Sapphire are unable to stop themselves from flirting, or Jasper begging Lapis to re-fuse, that's Garnet and Malachite attempting to re-assert themselves.
Yes, I know my theory is dumb and so am I, but I thought it was kind of interesting.

That's actually a fantastic idea. People often point out the addictive elements of fusion, but to say the fusions subconsciously want to exist again is novel and I need to sit down now and thinks about this
