Cows are basically walking slabs of meat, they evolved to be eaten by everything.

Dogs are/were more useful as working animals. This prohibition on eating working animals is fairly widespread such as on donkeys, horses etc. Whales are because there are other easier, cheaper and tastier things to eat. Whales were hunted for oil not so much for meat. We've moved on to petroleum and now to renewable energies. There's no more reason to hunt whales except at small scale for traditional reasons.

There is no reason to consume some animals if you are ok, but is another story if you are starving. Same with dogs, rats, cats, etc.

yea pretty much
you need 1000 calories of grass/plants to produce 1 calorie of cow or pig meat, and you would need a few hundred million calories of vegis to get one calorie of meat from a tiger, lion, cougar, ect

thats not even mentioning the extra water they will need, and time, and space, and all of the wasted heat

milk, fur, and labor output (horsepower) were the only reasons that domesticating goats and cows was worth it in the first place

and yea cats domesticated themselves, we have no use for them, but we didnt mind them eating scraps of food/pest that we were never going to eat in the first place
and one cat living in your house smells a lot better than a few hundred rats living in your house

people would be too dumb to understand breeding and genetic diversity, but tell them you need to sacrifice the best animal of the season, and whoever raised the best animal gets rewarded (religious praise, or religious financial offering, honor, ect), then people will do their best to raise healthy good livestock
all of those animals in the community that were second best and got to breed instead of being sacrificed? that ensured that next year/seasons herd of that animal will be stronger or faster or whatever it is that makes that animal valuable

religion is the only way that some crops were even domesticated in the first place, since writing hadnt been invented, and you need a few thousand years to properly domesticate a plant
