If I remember correctly, Jim Jones started out as a really inspirational person to a lot of people. His sermons were full of energy, and positive messages that a lot of people gravitated to. He would also do that bullshit faith healing stuff with people in the crowd who were pretending to be crippled, and he magically healed them.

The other thing was, he was very anti racism and stuff like that, and was 100% all about jesus, which is why a lot of black people were involved with the church.

He would aggressively target old people because they had social security checks which he could use as a monthly float income.

The young people were used as slave labor once they got kicked out of US because Jones was trying to infiltrate California politics. The feds wanted to come after him in Guyana because he was running a fucking cult and people wanted their family members back home safe.

To try and talk him into letting some people come back to the states, a Congressman named Leo Ryan flew down to Guyana with some journalists. Some church members went ape shit and killed them all. When Jones found out about this, he knew everything was fucked, and started giving out the kool aid.

Listen to the tape of the last minutes of everyone's lives, the children crying from drinking the cyanide is particulary heavy, but I think its worth a listen for history's sake.

Most of them didn't actually drink the kool-aid willingly: Jones had his own cadre and armed guards, and when he started handing out the poison, it wasn't optional. If anyone refused, they were forced to drink it. In fact, most of the members weren't so fanatical that they were willing to die for the shitstain he straight forced anyone who said no to drink it at gunpoint.

And in the end? He was such a fucking pussy, he had one of his guards blow his brains out rather than drink his own kool-aid.

They did regular drills when Jones and buddies would administrate drinks to everyone and after ingestion said there was poison in the drink. Then simply people would all go lay down

30 minutes later Jones would come back and tell that there was no poison and it was just a drill. So basically the people were already submissive and contempt with their dead when the real poison was administrated
