Thread challenge: Translate the following >This is my garden. It's very big and also very wide. On one side, there is the McDonald family and on the other side, there is the Korfman family. I like both my neighbors.

A lot of words are cognates but there are just as many that are long and have no relation to English so don't be fooled. The grammar is very different. Cases aren't that hard to learn imo but it's certainly different to English (i.e. saying 'mir' rather than 'to me'). The biggest difference (for me anyway) is how they phrase things. If you try and translate English directly into German it won't make much sense. The usage of cases and having the verb in the second position makes it rather different. That said it's not necessarily the hardest language out there, especially for an English speaker, and it's certainly easier than, say Slavic languages or non-IE languages. But French for example is easier and more similar imo.

Out of the germanic languages it's pretty different. Dutch or Norwegian would be closer. Even French or Spanish would probably be easier to learn. Going by FSI, they say it'd take 750 hours compared to 600 for the others I mentioned. Stuff like Russian would be around 1100.

There's small mistakes, but it's understandable >Deze is mijn tuin. Het is heel groot en ook heel breed. Deze can't really be used without noun, maybe only if you're weirdly talking about yourself in third person. And since tuin isn't neuter (de tuin, not het tuin), use hij instead of het.

Small spelling error in gebied (not gebeid). A tree isn't full of something in Dutch, it stands full with. Idiomatic thing I guess. Thus "de boom staat vol met appels". Again, time indication isn't a seperate sentence thingy in Dutch, thus the word order also slightly changed. "Morgen wil ik" or "Ik wil morgen" are both correct. 1/2

And damn, I used staat for "De boom staat vol" but changed it backed because I was thinking maybe staan/leggen was only used for location. I have to get further in my grammar books.

Forgot to mention this: don't use "gefallen" with people unless you like the person in a sexual/romantic way. For example "Sie gefällt mir." implies that you're attracted to her, or that you like her looks at least.
So you would say "Ich mag meine beiden Nachbarn." instead.
