The page reads in a Z motion, so HAND>JEANNE>GHOST JEANNE>JEANNE CLUTCHING HER HEAD, and I have no problem with that.
But since the arrow is an actual part of the art, the eye just goes along with it and drop right down the shaft directy to hurt Jeanne, then you realize you're leaving something behind, and you go back and read the other diagonal between the two Jeannes.
In short, even if the reading order of the of the "panels" (even if they don't have contours) is correct, the shapes in the page form a X which fucks up the reading because it distracts you from the correct Z reading direction.
