as a fusion they both learn both their weaknesses, and grow stronger from it and their personalities don't really conflict enough to make them unfuse for reasons that they can't grow out of and
Connie herself is barley even a character herself, she's the boring agreeable girlfriend.
She doesn't conflict with Steven, she doesn't cause him to act different (for anything that really develops him), she was once his anchor to humanity, but now she's actually apart of the gem battling
For a show that prides itself on its 3 dimensional female cast, the love interest is the most 1 dimensional character in the cast
Steven's coming of age journey is a boy turning into a woman, as the usual boy turning into a man
Connie is just a plot device to let this happen

she's an alright character.

the only thing that bothers me is that she can sort of fight gems just with a sword. She loses is she's by herself, but not instantly. if a 12 year old girl can stand her own against alien invaders, it kind of makes them out to be a pretty pathetic threat. the Crystal Gems aren't even necessary then. Just let the combined armies of the world fight the aliens if a 12 year old girl can do it.

Steven is unbearable so I hope so.
