There were trolls before the internet, for fucks sake, Usenet was full of them. During the 80s when BBS's were around people were trolling the fuck out of each other. I remember a local BBS in NYC, was a bunch of 16 to 25yr olds going ape nuts, multiple nodes and a chat room. You had trolls even before the WWW, you'll have them afterwards, it's the cost of doing business and what not.
I don't know even before the Internet when we were using modems and dialing into BBS, most of the users were my age on a local bbs in NYC, we had a few meet ups where a lot of users showed up, a lot of them weren't geeks, just normal for the most part, maybe a little socially off, but that happens when you spent hours a day dialing in and not hanging out with people. I would browse Usenet groups late 80s or so early 90s, some of the posters though I imagined were dark sick fucks who rarely saw the light of day, but there were very knowledgeable people around. I actually went out and celebrated when a Usenet troll got his ass handed to him and it was on the news.
USENET groups for sure, if that counts.
