Yeah that's it..my neighborhood was also settled/built by Germans so walking down certain streets in Cologne I felt at home. I was also surprised at how nice everyone was. I learned some German for the trip and the locals seemed pleasantly surprised that I did. They also were happy to meet someone with such an admiration for their culture.
