Is Martyrs kino?

Next level prosthetic work, well directed, good editing, creative and original story. Thoughts?

My apologies for low-res pic, screen capped a 720 rip.

yes it is and there will never be another horror film like it.

It's shit

and why is that? you have to explain yourself if you're going to give an opinion like that

Because I said so Reddit faggot

First half was cool. Last half i didn't enjoy. The entire point of the plot I found unsatisfying.

clearly you haven't seen the 2015 US remake

I didn't even think of that reason, my most sincere non-apologies to your mother who had to raise an autist

I watched Martyrs a couple of years ago whilst I was going through an ultraviolent movies phase and to it's credit it is the only movie since childhood that has ever actually shocked me with its violence.

The secret society was sort of believable but desu they could've just been a middle class torture cult that do it for pleasure. The whole "martyrs" idea doesn't seem logical and obviously anyone who says that there isn't an afterlife would just get written off as a failure anyway.

I do agree that the first half was stronger, but I found the second half pretty inventive and original. Why was it unsatisfying to you?

I feel like if they had gone with the pleasure route that it would have taken away some of the internal debate the viewer has when watching the final sequence. I can see your point though

I barely remember the movie. Did they explain why they had to use torture instead of just giving them some drug that would nearly kill them?

Because it's gay.

Martyrs are made through suffering.

First half of the movie is definitely revenge thriller kino. Some of the best you'll ever see. But the second the old folks show up and the torture starts everything goes to shit with the fucking dumbest explanation possible we about to die and have to know what comes after death so we torture people until they're at the brink of death, bring them back and ask them what they saw.

It's good. I don't get why it gets a lot of hate but I suspect it's because of the ending. I liked the ending, it's nihilistic and uncomfortable.

If they had just given them a drug, they would not have let go of their will to live. The torture was to wear them down so much that they were not afraid of death in the slightest, allowing them to transcend life on earth and see what's on the other side when they finally are on the brink of death, rather than fighting to live.

>First half of the movie is definitely revenge thriller kino
That's only like the first 10 or so minutes

Been a while since I've seen it, I just remember feeling like it was a let down from an excellent start. The Martyrs aspect felt contrived to me, and just a justification for torture porn, but they tried something unique at least. I didn't hate it, but i can't recommend it past a certain point.

even if you don't like the story, you have to praise it for what it accomplished with make-up and prosthetic. Masterfully done and on par or better than John Carpenter's practical effects.

>with the fucking dumbest explanation possible
Honestly don't see how this is dumb. Everyone wants to know what happens after we die, and if this were even possible people would go to those extremes

It's been close to a decade since i've seen it but wasn't that halfway through the second act when the old fucks show up?

Well the jokes on you user, my mother didn't raise me. She died shortly after childbirth due to anaphylactic shock from mis-prescribed medicine. Ha ha, you lose!

So dark and cathartic

>if this were possible
Exactly. If it were possible we wouldn't still be asking that question because it would be common knowledge. That's why nobody is doing that shit, since it doesn't work anyway.

Is this the one where the gore is obviously the director's fetish?

It starts out with the girl who escaped shotgunning the entire family, the nurse or doctor comes in at some point, tries to help her but the hallucinations she has makes her kill herself, she goes to another room and there's another girl with a steel mask drilled into her head(this was one of the grossest scenes imo) and cleans her) around that point the old people show up. I probably mixed some stuff up

This. There are plenty of suicidal people who have no fear death, and yet none of them have some sort of secret supernatural knowledge about what happens afterwards. Also, what could torturing people possibly tell you that millennia of religious doctrine and existential philosophy couldn't?

Then my most sincere congratulations to her since she didn't have to raise you and shelter you in her basement, probably would've been much more painful than a quick and easy death.

I think pain is an important ingredient in the whole thing. Martyrs usually suffer immensely, physically, before they die. Suicides may not care about death, but most don't go through severe, protracted, pain before being brought back from the brink.

Took the words out of my mouth. Suicides may come from immense mental pain, but the Martyrs experience immense mental pain in addition to immense physical pain.

Hate to break it to you user but homeless prostitutes don't have basements. Hard lines, you lose again.

So if you are the offspring of a homeless prostitute and whatever disgusting fuck would have sex with that, how do I lose?

Torture porn is never kino

But justified, purposeful torture porn can be, I've never seen another torture porn that actually justifies it as well as Martyrs did. I guess Saw justified it? Not very well though.

i'm sure that the upcoming remake of Flatliners (in theaters August 10th!) will cover the topic better.

1st half is decent, 2nd is pure meme.

What? No, the whole movie is on youtube. The Society doesn't show up until the 55 min mark.

Because despite all that I made it in life you fucking faggot. Nice six figure income in Norway with a great gf. Wtf have you done with all your privileges?

>Torture porn

You obviously haven't seen the movie.

>How do I lose?
Reddit: the question.

Are you for cereal? Nice job if that's true. If it's a lie then you're even more of an autist than the guy pointed out originally

>Everyone wants to know what happens after we die
Conveniently enough, everyone gets a chance to find out, and probably sooner than you'd prefer. So don't worry about what comes after because good or bad, it's an inevitability and there's fuck all anyone can do to stop it. Even an immortal being that exists in the universe has a lifespan of the universe. The bill comes due, the man comes around, the bell tolls. Enjoy what time you have, its a pointless endeavor to try and contemplate the hereafter.
In any regards, as a conscious corporeal being you've got literally no frame of reference to understand what would happen anyway. Any answer you'd get would only raise more questions, until one day you die, and you spent your whole life worrying about the afterlife. You will be dead for longer than you will be not dead. Nonexistence is the norm, enjoy this blip on the radar while you have the opportunity.

>Tips fedora knowingly

it was legitimately creepy and unsettling, something lacking in a lot of horror today

Gotten under your skin on a movie thread :)

Na, I'm lying, I am 25, unemployed and still live with my mom.

Are you me?

looks like the walking dead tier dogshit lmao

I've honestly had a thought since I was a kid that your "afterlife", or whatever, is living the way you die. When I saw this film it made me see a tangible idea trying to express that. Plus a LOT of ketamine sure helped as well.

Thought so. I'm a Dr. Still living with parents until next year - my mum still makes my sandwiches. Feels good man

>Nice six figure income in Norway with a great gf
If I visit Norway and murder some people will I get to serve my prison time there? It actually looks better than my current life.

It's genuinely worse.

What's even happening in that image?

Have you even seen the movie? It really isn't.

Well I was in med school for a week and then decided it wasn't for me. So fast forward here I am needing to find a job for my senior year getting my economics degree. Inly problem is Inowe the school 4000 bucks and my dad said he'd only pay half of that off.

Ref. first link

Most suicides don't even experience immense mental pain, it's mainly a slow constant suffering that they do not see an end of without taking their own life. It's not even that painful, but it never getting better is what makes you doubt if life will be worth living.

I personally really liked the ending. It was unexpected and seemed well thought out. For the whole movie you're witnessing all these horrible things, there is a clear evil that clearly you cannot relate with. Then suddenly you're forced to contemplate if all that horridness might actually be worth it.

You're a smart lad then. I knew a lot of people who stuck it out and did medschool even thought they hated it and now they're practicing medicine they want to die lmao.

Its not for everyone

Kewl bro. I've got 3 brothers and one day I hope to have a little place of my own out by the river. It's been great catching up.

I pee in that river every day

>on par or better than John Carpenter's practical effects.
Maybe if you're fucking blind

Yeah, I just googled John Carpenter effects and I think im going to retract that statement. His were much more creative and inventive but I do think the quality of the Martyrs work is up there.
