Plus, Japanese economy has never been an export oriented one.

That's a typical misunderstanding about Japanese economy. Japan might have been a powerful exporter, but it's always a small part of economy. Japan's trade dependency is among the lowest in the world.

Society speculated that Japan would overtake the US economy, the hype was greater than the current China will overtake the US economy in 10 years hype. Japan was the wealthiest nation in the world. Husbands would buy expensive jewelry for girls in their first date. Stocks and real estate prices soared. PC98 and 88 dominated the videogames (read: eroge) scene. There was no internet but BBS forums. Dakimakura, dollfies and other things did not exist, much less was anime and manga anyhow popular in the West. Noticeably less foreigners and cleaner streets. Otaku culture wasn't so big.
