Not in Manhattan but in the boroughs there are some fancy detached houses. But if you are wealthy enough to live in Upper East Side or other posh parts you have enough money for weekend homes in Long Island or upstate.

I actually am from Paris and yes NYC's subway smells like delicate flowers compared to our own. Nevertheless, and granted I haven't tried all the lines, I'd say NYC is on par with London. Didn't take the bus though.
