The Baltic countries were occupied by the orthodox (Russian empire) in the late 18th century, on the brim of 19th, which was quite too late to root out tradition. Latvians and Estonians were protestant due to being occupied by the Germans for 600 years, Lithuanians were Catholics due to always fighting and disliking Germans in general.
