What is it that convinces millennials to go to college for underwater basket weaving degrees rather than for STEM degrees?
What is it that convinces millennials to go to college for underwater basket weaving degrees rather than for STEM...
Liberal brainwashing.
The nancy boy in your photo has a STEM degree and works at the NSA. Probably should research your image choice before posting.
It could be that 4 out of 5 STEM graduates aren't working in STEM fields, the Congress is trying to increase the supply of STEM workers by drawing them from abroad thus reducing demand, and a lot of those 'useless' degrees aren't so useless after all so long as you pair them with post graduate study or are able to find a niche field.
No real grip on reality mixed up with the "follow your heart and the money will follow" bullshit
also pre housing crash burgers always loved to brag about the money they were eventually going to make online to non burger no matter how stupid the degree was. guess that changed when reality hit them in the face and they are now worse off financially than high school drop outs
it's easier to get in
I'd study medicin but I was chasing punai in highschool so i dont have the grades for it
>Going to school for a degree in Biology, studying pre-med so I can go to med school and be a surgeon
>Yesterday and Thursday were my new student orientation
>I live in the Midwest, so much to my surprise only one or two girls out of the hundreds of us looked like stereotypical dyke feminists
>Dean gives his welcoming speech
>Stops to make a point about "social justice nonsense"
>"You're here to learn, not to get offended and cry at everything."
>"Sometimes shit is gonna happen that you don't like, and we're all adults here, so you grit your teeth and you deal with it."
>"The real world isn't going to tolerate your safe space bullshit, so if you have thin skin, you can either get over it, or get out"
>The room cheers, only a very small section boos
>Every workshop I go to throughout the day does nothing but slam jokes on people with art or women's studies degrees
>Even the fucking leader of the women's studies department warned the students that you should only take it as a minor at best, or just out of interest at worst, because "what the fuck are you going to do with a women's studies major besides being a professional crybaby?"
Indiana might be a flyover state, but I fucking love it here
I was a lazy pothead in college. still am lazy pothead
started off doing mech. engineering (which I have been interested in for my whole life)
too much work, switched to applied mathematics
too much work, switched to Economics
graduated with BS economics. kinda regret it. I wish I worked for a couple years, got my shit together, then done school. thankfully, my dad is elec. engineer, mom is in law. they wouldn't have paid for my school had my degree gotten any more 'artsy' than Economics (i.e. sociology, fag studies, etc)
tl;dr STEM is 'hard' compared to non-STEM. because most college students have never actually worked a day in their life, difficult for them to understand the usefulness of a STEM degree over a bullshut one, and as such take the easy way out
You can't fix them. They feel entitled. And once you question any of their decisions they'll just scream "You baby boomers destroyed this economy I'm just trying to fix it"
>#FeelTheBern
>#FreeEducationAndMakeTheOnePercentPayForAllMyExpenses
they're not smart enough
job market is fucked everywhere and the future is bleak. computer science is a meme major. engineers are being imported from india.
you're pretty much fucked no matter what you major in these days. might as well pick something you might be good at.
What flag is this
Pothead user nailed it
Growing up I have always absolutely adored anatomy, but I was afraid to go to college to be a surgeon because "omg it's gonna take forever and I'm gonna be a gross old man when I come out" so I fell for the liberal bullshit of "just follow your dreams and you'll be a millionaire".
My stepdad gave me nothing but endless shit for wanting to get an art degree, and refused to help me every step of the way, even going as far as to mock me when we would go out, pointing and homeless people and saying "I bet he got an art degree too" or pointing out the pink haired losers and saying "is he a friend of yours?" Finally the brow-beating got to me, and I took a serious look at my classmates. They were all spoiled rich brats getting their degrees in feminist dance therapy or whatever the fuck, and "we're going to fix the old white man's world", and all that other horseshit, so I dropped out, took a long look at my life, spent some time working a full time job, got a house, got into politics, etc etc.
Now here I am finally going to school to get that med degree, and I'm 25 now so I'll be an even older, grosser old man, but I don't give a shit. I'm following the passion I should have in the first place, and I'm much happier for it.
I also don't have any of the aforementioned feminist basket weavers in my classes because as you said, they don't like real work, and dissecting a cow heart to label the individual parts is real work, when they could be finger painting instead.
its easier to get in and to finish.
Boomer parents that got $60k/year middle manager jobs right after their got their BA in fucking English.
>psychology and sociology make me feel bad about myself so they must be false
Sint Marteen
People need to realize we will never be that prosperous ever again and learn to give up ever retiring.
>Even caring about other people's majors.
I'm an ee student and couldn't give one fuck about other people majors. You should be grateful these faggots are choosing fag studies, less market competition for a job in them stem market. If they choose to go to a failed major people should at least make money from them. Talking shit on other majors is what stemfags who have nothing else in life do to make them feel better about their lives. Except sociology. They are ruining this country
>White people are all reincarnations of Hitler, and everything white people have ever done ever is nothing but war crimes, hate crimes, murdering endless waves of brown people
>Tyrone had a chimpout and shot up a gas station for twenty bucks? It was somehow the white man's fault
>Wanting to chop off your dick and wear panties is totally normal, you're the weird one if you don't do it!
7/10 you made me reply
I'm going to college as an English major.
I hate college. I hate everything about college. I hate going there. I hate the profs. I hate the people who go there. I hate the bureaucracy.. I would rather just work.
The only reason I'm going is because I still live with my parents and they won't get off my back about how important college is, and when I tell them it's not for me and it'd be more practical for me to start working, they say I haven't even gone to college yet.
So I'm going to take a semester to appease them, network where I can, and then get a real job.
It's my belief that college in general is stupid. I see so many retards dogpiling into STEM because now STEM being the sure thing has become a meme that spread to mainstream society. We don't need that many college educated people. America went to the moon when everyone was using slide rules, calculators were book-sized, and the average American had an 8th grade education. Now all the young fucks are going in and kicking shit for 4 years learning bullshit not even 1% of them will need.
I don't care about retiring, it's being able to maintain a reasonable standard of living while working that I actually care about.
good on you man. I want to go back to school one day, either get a masters or even just a second degree.
in the mean time attempting to dismantle the kike system from within. it is appalling how many 'professional economists don't even begin to understand the history of central banking. they conveniently leave all that out during school, so a lot of these guys are left viewing a privately owned central bank as being absolutely 100% necessary (which to a degree, it is necessary), though when they reason through it I can see a growing fire in their eyes
>Now all the young fucks are going in and kicking shit for 4 years learning bullshit not even 1% of them will need.
Not to mention you can literally learn almost all of that shit off the internet at your own pace these days, if you're so inclined. My entire fucking college career (engineering, fwiw) was basically review for me since it was a pain in the ass to get into classes and I'd already wikipedia'd all the subject material long before I actually got into the relevant class.
This.
Because they're convinced that they can meet the '4 year degree' requirement on every job application so long as it's a four-year degree in whatthefuckever. Doesn't matter what it is, so long as they have the piece of paper to back up their "hard work"
YOUR MOTHER IS A WHORE THREE FOUR PEOPLE EVERY NIGHT FUCKING!
Yeah, society is pushing college far too much and all it's doing is FORCING people to delay adulthood even more because you can be a student into your 30s, and if you haven't gone to college people think you're going to be working only the most dead-end jobs for all eternity and there's something wrong with you.
So now people are socially pressured to spend money going to college to fulfill some shit credit minimums, wasting time, money, and life when they could learn it all for free on the internet and you could weed out the shitheads in the real world through competency exams, certifications, etc.
This can't be good for society.
Because they're stupid. If they had even a miniscule amount of intelligence they wouldnt be liberals.
>be brainwashed
>call others brainwashed
have you ever read into one of those courses user?
That used to be true about 40 or so years ago. However due mostly to the over abundance of degree holders that is not the case anymore.
just be yourself lol
Beats me. I'm in criminal justice so that's the least cucked of the social sciences. Even though I have no desire to become a lawyer anymore, nor do I have the financial means or academic achievements to do it.
At least college is cheap here compared to the US. I'm only 30k in the hole instead of 100k of course I live off campus which saves a lot
>he fell for the STEM meme
Enjoy driving cab because all the employers would rather pick cheap and desperate H1b turd worlders.
le millennial meme
le university meme
le nu-male fashion meme
I'd give you gold if I could, sir!
Based.
packing my bags now
Nice.
Teams still need a good 20-30% white American men to actually do all of the planning and work and spoonfeed the useless H1-B worker ants
That never happened.
Nice cringeworthy fantasy midwestfag.
Psychology, like actual neurology and studying behavior and shit is cool. Sociology is pretty much shit no matter what you do.
In fact I just took a "Law and Society" course that was cucked as fuck. My final assignment was to write a, and I shit you not, social justice essay. I got lucky because I picked wrongful convictions and wrote about an organization that provides legal aid and shit, so my conscience was mostly intact.
Winrar
why do you need to be that faggot
I won't lie, I'm trying to stay in school as possible because I don't want to deal with shit in the real world. It's basically the same as being a NEET, except you learn some cool shit and read some interesting books along the way. I don't really have any interest in getting a job or any of that shit. I'm just along for the ride.
Liberalism.
/thread
Niiiiiice
Unfortunately here in University of Arizona, they've gotten ground. Community college has quite a few of those fags. UoA has their own department of LGBTQIABBQATFFBINAACP outreach which makes sure everyone is 100% nice and sensitive to every single gaylord on campus.
STEM is boring as fuck
I'd just be suprised if your teacher started saying Sup Forums memes. It could happen user, but now it's obvious your were lying about going to college on a Saturday night on Sup Forums on Sup Forums.. Kys.
Many likely believe the lie that educaton = higher social status and more money.
As opposed to the application of skill and intelligence = higher social status and more money.
And also believe that higher education = higher intelligence.
Former Hoosier (the state kind, not the IU kind) here, is is true. Indiana is poor and as "rednecky" as a non-Dixie state can get, but it is based moments like this. I miss it at times as I now live in a much more cucked area (better jobs though which makes it worth it).
Except for Bloomington/IU, which may as well be San Francisco.
I'm going for physical therapy so I can travel eventually, it doesn't sound boring.
Really unbelievably bad advice from authority figures in high school and parents. I was like a drowning man after my time in the army, I had no idea what to do with my life so I grabbed onto a liberal arts degree because I fell for the higher education meme. I am now 27, about to graduate with a masters degree in history. I got a book on the way, but I just don't know how this will pan out. It still infuriates me to remember the bad advice I was given as a teenager.
The worst we have at my school is all the major offices have the little rainbow sign that says "hey we promise we won't make fun of you for being a weird faggot" but I feel like it's there more for legal purposes than for special snowflake reasons
Are you that autistic faggot who thinks everything is word for word how it's written, or can you not realize when something is being paraphrased for the sake of a story?
Because these days kids want to learn about what they enjoy learning and doing, not what is beneficial to society. But that is partially because we create stupid things like "underwater basket weaving" and allow them to exist.
In the eye of the beholder, but you inadvertently bring up a great point:
People who enter STEM fields, even supposed meme ones like CS because they genuinely love the material will find great success in life.
It's the people that don't truly love the field and major in it for money who either A) switch majors/drop out or B) can't keep a job once they graduate.
>this is what happens when a GED subhuman tries to imagine college courses
>started off in mech. engineering
You started off in the most boring engineering field imaginable
You can't kick the can down the road forever, man. You would be better served working in a deli for those years and saving your money. Do you really wanna be a 30 year old student, and then the ride ends at some point and you're just fucked?
One of my friends is 30 years old and going to a religious college so he can be a minister or something. There was a couple there that had been attending that school for over 20 years, because they couldn't find jobs and just kept staying in school indefinitely, taking out more and more loans until in the end people came to collect, and then they had to go on the run and no one knows where they are.
It's like prison, people get used to the structure and not being under the pressure of the real world, and then they can't handle it outside. And then you end up like that old fucking guy from The Shawshank Redemption.
They're lazy fucks that want the EZ mode degree.
The scam is that Universities are in it for the betterment of society when it’s really just all about ‘muh enrolments’. Also doesn’t help that many have be overrun by militant feminists.
They do not hold students to a high enough standard and push through incapable graduates in all fields.
Most profs either never participated in the work force or failed miserably.
HR departments do not know how to sift through the mess for the actual talent, leading to scores of bad hires. This pushes them to the lowest common denominator – aka India.
The system is broken but because it worked for boomers forty years ago it’ll continue for a few more generations.
I went to school for Math, and I had a hell of a hard time. God damn, was it hard. I struggled constantly. I studied constantly. In the end, it made me a better person - made me learn the value of work and practice, etc.
So, my honest answer is it's simpler and easier. People in, say, business courses weren't in the library studying every freaking Friday night, that's for sure.
Thanks for the advice. I'll probably get something after I graduate unless I decide to go for a master's for another year and my grades are up to par. I'm not interested in going into research and getting a doctorate, too much writing. I can barely stomach a 10 page essay. I'd go mad before writing hundreds of pages of useless shit.
If you're going to college and not getting a STEM degree, prepare for a hellish gauntlet of liberals. I'm a psychology major (I have no reservations about admitting most of the people with this major are stupid as fuck and that the field itself it based heavily on pure bullshit and statistics that cant be replicated) and almost everyone in these type of classes are stereotypical liberal college chicks.
No wonder people's mental health and the state of the mental health care system in this country is so awful.
This
The only time I have to deal with the spoiled brats is in the classes everyone has to take, like math and reading
No pink haired dykes crying about muh ohpressun in my intro cardiothorasic lectures
I also have a degree in psych (it was a dual major), and the amount of hand holding and extremely dumb people in those classes were amazing. I even went to a college many would consider pretty good.
Look at that haircut. Really soak it in. The buzzcut all around but on the top and in the front. All the long hair thickly gelled into place. Dyed multiple colors. The old-timey mustache and the wide-rimmed "look how nerdy i am" glasses. The lack of testosterone blurring his age and sex; he could be 12 or 35 for all I know.
Jesus Christ, do kids not get beat up any more?
>do kids not get beat up anymore
Barely. Anti-bullying campaigns and Zero tolerance policies worked in tandem to make sure of it. When I was in 5th or 6th grade I got suspended for PLAY fighting with my best friend, and I didn't even injure him or make him bleed. Boys are not allowed to be boys anymore.
