North Vietnam actually tried that in the Tet Offensive, which was throw enough bodies at the South hoping to break it, although it didn't work and they lost so much manpower that they avoided a direct confrontation until after the US withdrawal in 1973.

The War was started by the South pre-emptively when Lincoln wasn't even suggesting to abolish slavery in existing slave states. Your ancestors died for nothing, and you're honoring the rich white bourgeoisie that played them into the grave.

The war went on as long as it did because a lot of Union generals really didn't want to fight it. They didn't like having to fight their old friends from the prewar army and many of them rather admired Southern culture as aristocratic and noble unlike the grimy factories and immigrant slums of the Northern cities. Many officers too were pissed off about the Emancipation Proclamation, they if anything only wanted to save the Union and didn't want to have to fight for the Negro's freedom.

Grant and Sherman actually weren't that different from most of their peers, neither of them actually had anything against the South or slavery, but where they succeeded and guys such as McClellan failed is that they were able to reconcile themselves with Lincoln's political goals, mostly because neither had political ambitions of their own which was quite unlike the numerous scheming army politicians like McClellan and Hooker.
