Specifically, what is the music that is not just a backdrop to vulgar lyrics about money grubbing, self-pity, and sex?
I ask here because Sup Forums doesn't know what music is; you could play them a recording of a train, tell them how Pitchfork loved it, and they'd be nodding their heads and talking about what a great ambient track it is.

Your mistake is in thinking of this as a genre specific question.
Within each genre there is a wide variety of music and you can usually find what you want. No reason to arbitrarily limit yourself to one type of music.

I work with musicians a lot too, and the most technical, capable and original musicians I've talked to either play some obscure subgenre of jazz or some obscure subgenre of metal.
