> "I did begin a story placed about 100 years after the Downfall, but it proved both sinister and depressing. Since we are dealing with Men, it is inevitable that we should be concerned with the most regrettable feature of their nature: their quick satiety with good. So that the people of Gondor in times of peace, justice and prosperity, would become discontented and restless — while the dynasts descended from Aragorn would become just kings and governors — like Denethor or worse. I found that even so early there was an outcrop of revolutionary plots, about a centre of secret Satanistic religion; while Gondorian boys were playing at being Orcs and going around doing damage. I could have written a 'thriller' about the plot and its discovery and overthrow — but it would have been just that. Not worth doing."

The more he wrote, the more he shat.

Tolkien is to creative literary genius what Martin is to hack pulp idiocy. They both so far surpass anyone else in their field that they will be remembered 1,000 years from now as a kind of yin and yang of fantasy, a Manichaen duality of speculative letters. For every sublime, luminous beauty that Tolkien has gifted the world, Martin has cursed us with a tedious, banal ugliness. It is unfair to compare the two directly on any one point, because Martin is in every way the anti-Tolkien, patently sterile, parasitical, and inferior, but so much so that he becomes a monument in his own right, and counterbalances Tolkien. Could one exist without the other? Tolkien obviously could. But it is only by the contrast that Martin offers that we can truly appreciate the full depths and heights of Tolkien. Our understanding of Tolkien would be incomplete if Martin had never set pen to page. It is through only the abject failure and futility of Martin that we can approach an apprehension of the true scope and scale of Tolkien's hitherto inconceivable greatness. Perhaps this is what Tolkien had in mind when he wrote about the Music of the Ainur. If Tolkien is a subcreator in the image of Eru, truly Martin is like unto Melkor. It is only reflected in the awfulness of the one that we can fully see the goodness of the other.

Did George RR Martin predict Sup Forums pretending to be Nazi's and the rot of American society after world war 2?

Imagine being the person who wrote this.

>George RR Martin
???

What did he mean by this?

Obviously that was written by the modern day literary genius and creative visionary George RR Martin. Creator of GAME OF THRONES and the rightful king of explosive diarrhea.

Memes aside, it reads like something he would write.

Why does a basic question about worldbuilding in LOTR trigger the Sup Forums nerds so badly?

Because it's a retarded point of criticism

youtube.com/watch?v=5K3H-FjEhkw

Nobody cares about the interest rate on a down payment for a horse

That's not good literature

Tolkien is like a God to many of the more traditional nerd-culture factions, especially right of center on the political spectrum. Implying that different perspectives can be taken on his worldbuilding and that different tones can be applied is basically blasphemy.

I like GoT and ASOIAF because they try to address some of the questions LOTR raises.
The sad thing is that nobody really cared about those questions to begin with.
Martin does fantasy in a newer history sort of way, where we make visceral battles and characterize the key figures. Martin would write Scipio Africanus as a real character who drinks and fucks and whores around and has to have a redemption arc before he defeats Hannibal; meanwhile, Tolkien would write Scipio as a pure hero who is the rising sun of the new age of warfare.
So what do you like, waffles or pancakes? Well I like both, even though once I've had too much of either I begin falling asleep.
What do I give a shit about Aragorn's tax policy? Or Gimli and Legolas' homoerotic relationship in the fifty years after? I don't. Nobody does.

Do you think he talks about incest so much because he has been a virgin for so long that he has developed all sorts of depraved fetishes?

>Tolkien is like a God

you're fucking retarded nobody says that

>especially right of center

Oh bullshit, the hippies in the 60s loved LotR

>different perspectives

Nobody cares about different persepctives just ones that don't suck

You could criticize ANY STORY EVER for not having enough tax policy focus, including GoT because it's a retarded idea to full your story up with irrelevant bloat like that

>Oh bullshit, the hippies in the 60s loved LotR

you realise the early (and i mean early) hippy movement was influenced by nazis and nazi ideas? i mean the whole idea of going back to nature was inspired by the theory of blood and soil. the more nature focused national socialised 40 years before the hippies came around had their utopia as a nudist agrarian nature worshipping pagan psychdelic paradise.

Manichaean*
otherwise perfect

>early (and i mean early) hippy movement was influenced by nazis and nazi ideas? i

That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard.

Hippies were just a bunch of retarded communists, how are you this bad at history?

I agree *slurps down McDonalds double hamburger* *burps* *digests and poops*

Someone who actually appreciates art?
