Mexico would win the initial few battles but then Italy would join the Mexican team and lose them the war.

Good at violence, but Italy lacks the resources to match Anglo countries. Italy has the 4th most powerful army in Europe. Fascists tend to suck at war because they LARP and become overly ambitious instead of using real tactics past the first initial victories.

They did terrible because they never had a real military tradition. Their officers were always weak and with zero experience. Their military equipment was also very bad.

Certain Italian units have always been of respectable quality, but during WWII the officers and troops of the regular army were garbage. They also had real problems modernizing their equipment.

Italian Air Force was also decent, but again, primitive during that war.

I think the real problem with Italians was that they had relied on mercenaries and foreign troops for too long to really have the military traditions of the Prussians or British. This was actually also a problem in the United States initially, but we were able to compensate for it with huge amounts of material and a reliance on artillery and air superiority--something that the Italians simply couldn't do.

If Hitler and Mussollini had cooperated to a greater degree in producing standardized equipment and hardware between their two nations (not as implausible as you might think, just a matter of will) the Italians might have been able to contribute more meaningfully to the Axis.

More recently I've served with Italians. They're good people and they can be very professional, but it seems to vary greatly between units, which is odd. There's one batch of the fuckers who never walk, they only run everywhere. Those guys are freaks.
