$50k is not good but not poverty either. Median entry-level salary of an engineer (not computers) is around $65-70k. $50k is more like a clerk's salary.

It's an entry-level salary for a job that will make you middle class eventually. A teacher will make less than that to start with, but will end up with $75-$80k eventually. You can live pretty well on that in most places in America. Where I grew up, a half acre house costs $125k or so.
