Sanskrit is optional, some people (scholars, Brahmins, etc.) are more inclined to take it. It's not important for everyday life, but every language is effused with it, every Indian is familiar with some sanskrit words, from religion, etc.
Hindi won't help with Sanskrit, the pronunciation and grammar are nowhere similar. Some people speak Sanskritized versions of languages (spoken by Brahmins historically), which do certainly help.
