SAAAKEEE
One of my favorite films
weeaboo
SSAAAAAAAAKKEEEEE
So good that you didn't think about Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise for the duration of it.
Enjoyable movie. Loved the ending. The most common criticisms I've seen of it are related to historical accuracy, as is common with many "based on true events" historical movies.
100% kino
>inb4 picture of Seagal getting buttblasted about not being cast
It's way too sentimental and one-sided
one of cruise's best performances, superb score by zimmer, ken watanabe based as fuck, battles are top tier. frequent re-watch for me.
Kino af. Even the Japanese loved it.
this
so do Japanese women really want to fuck you if you kill their husband
Western women want that as well.
No, no. Another movie that I was offended by. I mean Hollywood is crazy. "The Last Samurai" starring... Tom... Cruise? He's the last samurai? Give me a break. That movie was offensive. I mean Hollywood is crazy. First they had "The Mexican" with Brad Pitt, and now they've got "The Last Samurai" with Tom Cruise, well I've written a film, maybe they'll produce my film: "The Last Nigga On Earth" starring Tom Hanks, how about that?
I liked the sequel The Last Cowboy with Jackie Chan more.
Good film that gets a bad rep because of the confusing poster
>"The Last Samurai" starring... Tom... Cruise? He's the last samurai?
Good litmus test for discovering who is in fact functionally retarded.
In this case as in most cases the melanin content works too.
>WHISKEEEEEEY
One of my favorite films. Incredibly comfy. Also it was really good about using historical accuracy. It was historically accurate enough in the right places to feel authentic. But it knew not to be too autistic about it and ruin the story. It used real life events for inspiration rather than drawing on them directly.
Really top notch stuff. It feels like it's accurately capturing the times without feeling pretentious.
Great movie, Hans Zimmer fucking outdid himself in this one.
Agreed, I think this might be his best soundtrack
Excellent film, superb acting and that ending.
One of the most underrated movies because too many cuck critics complained about white-washing and couldn't separate a fucking movie from historical accuracy.
There is only one source of this pic left on the easily-searchable Internet. Spread it wide, anons.
This and master of commander are films I thought were mediocre when they came out but now realize even a mediocre historical adventure film about masculine themes done with serious filmmaking is excellent by today's standards and should be cherished whenever one pops up. Lost city of z and Dunkirk are the only ones we're getting this year.
unfairly criticized for being a ripoff of "Dances with wolves" when it actually is a subversion of the trope. Cruise is probably the worst part of the film, and he's not even bad in it. Ken Watanabe is amazing in it, and both the score and photography are top game.
Kino/10.
I fucking loved this movie. It helped that the soundtrack was god tier. The village part of the movie was top tier comfy. Unfortunately it's shat on by a lot of people today since it's popular to cry about "white washing" and the "white savior trope" these days even though both are false in regard to the movie.
holy shit this. only movie cruise has ever been in where he actually fucking blended and didn't distract from the overall experience
How is it a subversion of Dances With Wolves?
Is Cruise not the last samurai? Does he not become accepted as a samurai with Taka puts her husband's armor on him?
The last samurai is Katsumoto not Algren
>Does he not become accepted as a samurai when Taka puts her husband's armor on him?
When he comes out and Ujio comes up to him and gives him a respectful nod despite dogging him the entire time he's in the village?
Plural for samurai is still samurai. The title is for the last age of the samurai, literally the end of an era and class. The title wouldn't sound good if it said, The Last of the Samurai.
One of my all time favorites. Great performances, fantastic soundtrack and incredibly comfy all around.
So many people i know dismiss it because "Tom Cruise is the last samurai? Dumb."
Those people are dumb, but the film would've probably been elevated to classic status had it simply been about a captain of the Meiji emperor's army who slaughtered a bunch of samurai in the past, (like how Aruguru-sanslaughtered a bunch of Indians in the past), and then he gets fucking captured and the movie plays out like it does with Cruise but without the english speaking scenes.
But Cruise finding his way around the village and their customs is the best part of the movie.
Forgot to mention his hair is fantastic.
youtube.com
It's not quite clear, does the boy know Algren killed his father?
>But Cruise finding his way around the village and their customs is the best part of the movie.
But that's doable with a supposed captain of the Meiji army who would be ignorant of the samurai's customs and ways of life.
>Forgot to mention his hair is fantastic.
You've got me there. Plus there's also the simple fact that the film would not have been made if it wasn't Cruise or an actor of equivalent status.
>Prolefeed: Last Samurai
>Kino: Shogun
It's way better than this ahistorical crap.
I've had that fucking 1000 pager since I was 17. Still haven't read it.
Seen this shit in theatres when I was like 7 or 8
Shit was cash
>films need to be historically accurate to be good.
GTFO Sup Forums
Pick it up if you want to read about fat japanese men having boys stroke them off while they listen to the screams of prisoners being boiled alive.
I was just reading some reviews. I was gonna settle for the 1980 mini-series, but apparently that only focuses on Blackthorne whereas the novel focuses on fucking everything: The power struggle between the regents, with Blackthorne merely an observer.
Whoops posted by accident. I'll probably read it when I'm in my 60s or something. Last time I read tried to read a 1000 page book I got busy and tried to return to it only to get frustrated that I wasn't quite up to date with what was happening.
The miniseries is great, and John Rhy-Davies is perfectly cast. Most of the cast is great, as a matter of fact. But yea a lot of stuff has to be omitted. If you try to read the book you'll probably find out real soon if it's gonna suck you in or not.
Mini-series is all on youtube though.

Great movie. One of Tom's best. Real kino
Historical accuracy is the worst possible criticism, I don't even consider it criticism. It's what brainlets and nerds complain about when they can't actually appreciate a film. It's not a documentary.
It's kino, that being said
Fuck this movie, the last samurai should have been that Katsumoto dude and not Cruise
Actually a favorite of mine. I know it's whitewashed american crap but it's still a pleasant movie to watch. I believe it's the reason I like cherry blossom trees and japanese gardens and samurai movies and stuff now.
>This... was a good conversation.
No chinks in samurai armour, kek
and the wife was QT af
>only movie
You're forgetting Collateral
Jeez, the amount of one-liners and wordplay. Takes you back to a time when even reviews could be kino-lite
Is Tom Cruise really an awful person?
I almost stopped watching when the ninjas appeard
>maybe they'll produce my film: "The Last Nigga On Earth" starring Tom Hanks, how about that?
I'd fucking love that. Would watch the shit out of it.
AYO
HOL' UP

SAMURAIZ AND SHIEEEET?
You're right. He's good in both.
Better
musashi is GOAT manga
lmao meant vagabond fingers tyed before it registered
Glad someone made a thread about this film. I have been waiting 7 years to ask this question.
What fucking year is it suppose to be? I don't understand. At what point in time where they slaughtering samurais and for what fucking reason?
The sengoku Jidai was in 1500-1600. Gatlin Guns or marchine guns or whatever the fuck they are called are a later invention.
I just don't understand historically what the fuck is happening in the movie.
I remember watching this when I was a kid, I cried at the end. Saw the film again recently and felt nothing except a little satisfaction at the retard samurais getting gunned down.
They should have armed themselves and defended their way of life instead of riding to certain death like faggot retards.
It's about the imperialisation of Japan, not the Sengoku jidai.
Well he's a scientologist and scientology is pretty fucking shady
how do you know what the sengoku jidai era was but not the meji restoration? this was late 1800s bro
Yeah that's what I meant. I've heard he's a Scientologist but I don't know of a single actual bad thing he's done.
great movie the final battle was pure kino
youtube.com
>He's the last samurai?
t. Didn't watch the movie
Because there are endless videogames about the sengoku period, but not one about the meji restoration.
Tell me more. I will look it up as soon as I get home anyway, but if you want to share your knowledge. I will read you, also thank you for giving me the name of the period.
>Samurai are the traditionalists who don't want imperial scum to ruin their country
>Ruling class of Japan is pressured by outside forces (mostly America xD) to open up trade
>Japs eventually give in, open up trade routes n shit
>Samurai get pissed off and sperg out / go bushido on their ass in an attempt to stop this pivot away from their way of life
>Actually win a few battles, but ultimately get fucked by a professional army
>Tfw no traditional Japanese waifu
>there are endless videogames about the sengoku period, but not one about the meji restoration.
I think he put Katie Holmes under surveillance by his scientology buddies after divorce or something? I imagine something like that might also have happened when he was married to Nicole Kidman since she's also reluctant to discuss him and scientology. I don't think he's done anything bad other than that. But yeah he's in some pretty shady shit regardless
FYI are you not American? I feel like they included Tom Cruises monologues about the Civil War / slaughter of Native Americans to both put the history of the movie into perspective for the normie viewers, and to help us understand his motivations for turn-coating to the anime side.
It was pretty kino, an outsiders view of a hyper idealized Japanese feudal society combined with a compelling story of finding peace through protecting that which you hold dear
...
Musashi is the novel. The translation is very odd, not sure if I recommend it yet or if I should just drop it for Vagabond.
>le false flag concern trolling
Fuck off back to shadowing fat girls on tumblr
That's a quote you dumbshit.
This is the version I played. It goes from the Mongol Invasion to Japan up to the end of the Sengoku.
I never bought shogun 2 because they added "lol samurais" as a unit, plus I already played the game why do it again.
Not American nor European.
Thanks man, so the movie was pretty faithful overall to the events.
Great movie. Not too deep. Not too shallow. Great characters. 9/10 movie.
It´s actually one of the best Tom Cruise movies along with Interview with the vampire.
If you enjoy it you should play fall of the samurai total war
So many feels to be had playing as the samurai
>so the movie was pretty faithful overall to the events.
Yeah but I can't help but feel the film would've just been better overall if they stuck to the realities: The samurai were using guns, too. The samurai weren't these completely noble people the film would have you believe. The meiji army wasn't a bunch of villains. Very Hollywood, par for the course.
This except it's definitely not a 9. A 7 for sure.
You should try watching it again once you've grown up.
Late 1860's, roughly
He fucking states the year in the film you dolt. 1876.
>They should have changed their way of life to defend their way of life from change
what did he mean by this?
But that is what happened. The samurai had guns, too.
It's not about them using guns you autistic
lol at all these faggots who don't know what a brilliant comedian Paul Mooney is.
This thread is weeaboos
Immediately what I though of...Mooney at the Movies on the Chappelle Show for you youngfags
> last samurai
> edge of tomorrow
Is tom cruise a secret weeb? He always pull it off too. Edge of tomorrow is one of the few hollywood adaption of japanese source material that isn't completely shit.
It's a shit movie that nu-rights like because it stars a white guy instead of an asian guy, making it a cause.
I'll try that
