I like the dark knight but you can't really compare it's success to iron man, Batman already had 6 movies before that. Batman and Superman transcend comic books since they've been ingrained in pop culture since the 60s and 70s.

Marvel had already lost their biggest properties like spider-man and x-men so they had to build from basically nothing. It's hard to imagine now, but had you asked anyone outside comics who Iron Man was back in 2007 they wouldn't know.

If DC could make a great standalone Martian Manhunter movie without first introducing him in Justice league or some shit I'd be impressed.
