Sup Forums, my life has been shaken. After years of believing my father's side of the family comes from Scotland, I only today discovered the truth. I am descended from the Ireland, and only momentarily was my great-great-great grandfather living in Scotland after migrating from Northern Ireland for an unknown reason. (suspected theory is it's related to the fact he was Catholic). His son, my great-great grandfather, migrated to Australia.
This is obviously very shocking news after being immersed in Scottish tradition and culture for such a long amount of time. It saddens me to some regard, having admired the Scots and proudly proclaimed my heritage to other blokes, but I have been living a lie.
As a descendent of a Catholic family who is now Irish, I now need you, the Irish of Sup Forums, to redpill me. Teach me about your land and your ways, tell me about the culture and history of Ireland, and whether I should support the independence of Ireland or remain a member of the Kingdom.
Has anyone on Sup Forums ever been surprised by your heritage, ashamed or glad? What's Sup Forumss opinion on Ireland, the Troubles and the people?
Hello brother! I'm 3/8ths Irish and 1/8th Scottish. All in all, at least half Celtic. My mother was adopted however, and although her birth name is Welsh, I'm not certain of her heritage, and she certainly doesn't look it.

As far as I'm aware, I have no Scottish in me, or at least, it's very minimal. Atkinson, a very common last name, and the last name of my mum, could be Scottish, but I'm pretty certain it's northern English.
As far as I can tell, I'm 40% Irish, 40% English and 10% Spanish and 10% unknown. Unfortunately, my great grand mum's infidelity left me with easily tanned skin, brown hair and brown eyes, going my appearance, I have no Irish on English on me, very unfortunate.

Actually, only my paternal grandfather was Scotch-Irish and our first ancestor in North America was a Methodist preacher in Canada around the beginning of Victoria's reign. The rest of my heritage is mostly English from the colonial period, Dutch, and German.
A lot of Americans know about the Scotch-Irish connection and are proud of it. Many of our presidents have Ulster in their heritage, probably more have Ulster in their heritage than any English county.
