Really? Tarkovsky made your FAVORITE movie? Really? Mirror is beautiful, possibly the closest thing to poetry on screen. Andrei Rublev is a tremendous film. But that's what you put on after a hard day at work?
Resnais? You want to study film form to relax?
I'm earning my PhD in Cinema/Media Studies and I'll be the first to tell you that a great film doesn't necessarily mean it should register as being a favorite.
When I want to watch a movie for the sake of it, I'll go with Star Wars for the 5,000th time before I turn to watching Persona again. Give me Indiana Jones before Haeneke. I'd rather watch Keaton than King Vidor.
Who the fuck are you trying to impress, Sup Forums? This board is essentially strangers on the internet and even then you can't shake off acting like a know-it-all dickhead.

share your sentiment bra, love his movies too, but i would rather watch fifth element, aliens or fucking ferris bueller when i need to brighten my day a bit

I treat cinema as an art form and not a security blanket.

I don't have any favorite movies in the sense of movies I like to cuddle up on the couch and put on after a long day. I pretty much only watch movies when I'm in the mood for actual artistic stimulation. Pretty much never for escapism. Not that I'm above escapism - but for whatever reason, I don't use movies for it.

>to brighten my day a bit
I'd rather jerk off to porn, smoke and drink. What's your point. That's not what movies are for.
Ayden Howard
>I'd rather jerk off to porn, smoke and drink. What's your point. different strokes for different blokes, bra

Doesn't matter. Hammers are made to hit nails, but you can shove it up your ass if you like. If it doesn't satisfy your prostate doesn't mean it's a bad hammer.

This.
My favorite movie is Lawrence of Arabia and it's great to watch seriously or to unwind. This meme where great film can only be watched with your pinky out in some smoke filled arthouse cinema is ridiculous. Good film is good film. It's like saying you rather read a pop up book to relax instead of a classic.
Jeremiah Sanders
i'd rather keep hammers and nails away from my ass, is all I am saying bra

Tarkovsky was a window licker.

Your favorite movie doesnt have to be the best movie you've seen.
Just like your favorite movie doesn't have to be one you want to watch all the time. Maybe it means a lot to you in other ways, maybe it played a huge role in molding you.
Jurassic Park is my favorite movie, but it by no means is the best movie I've ever seen
Jack Rogers
agree with you, but I think OP is pointing out how some people on here act pretentiously by claiming they can sit through a movie like Ulysses anytime they like and enjoy it wholeheartedly
Jason Ramirez
>Ulysses 1967 one*
Liam Bennett
That’s a pretty specific definition of ‘favourite’, OP. I think you’re the narrow-minded one here.
Anthony Walker
I like watching Barton Fink when I'm ill.

I don't think one needs to be entertained by something to consider it a worthwhile experience watching it. I mean, I will say my favourite movie and the best movie I've ever seen are probably not the same one but a lot of genuinely artistic movies are also enjoyable to watch. I couldn't get into Tarkovsky either (though I've only seen Stalker and The Sacrifice) because I thought awide from their visual beauty they were thematically and emotionalle not all that appealing to me but I genuinely enjoy movies by Fellini, Orson Welles or Bergman and I do find them engaging and even entertaining.
There are also a lot of movies that are meant to be entertainment first and foremost but utterly fail to entertain me even one bit. I'd ratcher watch any movie by Fellini than sit through Rogue One again.
