Eh that is only really shown to affect birds as best I know. If it works for mammals I suspect it affects hair rather than skin, and quit having much effect once we lost most of our hair.

Remember mammals *typically* have white skin even at the equator. Because they typically have this coat of fur that almost completely blocks the sunlight from it. We lost our fur coat first, then darkened our skin to better survive the tropics without it, then still later lightened the skin again when adapting to colder darker climates.
