Because Lee has been producing remakes for over a decade, he wasn’t expecting the online controversy surrounding his upcoming Netflix film “Death Note,”
“When something is adapted, it’s different than when there are characters written with a specific race that are being changed,” says Lee. “Chinese remakes of Korean films aren’t expected to have Korean actors. There was a Japanese remake of ‘Sideways,’ and no one would complain that it doesn’t star a Caucasian person.
>There was a Japanese remake of ‘Sideways There was? Was it any good?
Cameron Walker
The show has apparently been testing horribly, and now they're going to blame it on the "whitewashing controversy". I bet it's the cinematic equivalent of a stinking pile of shit.
Kevin Sanchez
Except L is British
Samuel Sanders
It's a movie.
Andrew Butler
So could Black L defeat Japanese Light?
Charles Green
Yes, just pull out a gun and shoot him. L already strongly suspected Light from the start. But he needed to prove he was Kira.
Alexander Wood
You movie sucks
Get over it
Carson Carter
They did the same with Ghostbusters, blame the "boogyman" of "whitewashing" and cut the losses
Noah Wright
>wasn’t expecting the online controversy
yeah fucking right
Christian Walker
>when white people are cast as non-caucasian characters WHITEWASHING WHITEWASHING WAAAAH >when minorities are cast in non-same race roles, stop being racist GOY, the japanese and koreans did it
Nolan Miller
To make it short, american products needs more diversity.
I wonder when they just will stop using whites.
Matthew Edwards
didn't he interrupt someone else's speech because he was pissed he didn't win a golden globe or something
Oliver Collins
It's not even about the race of the characters anymore. They got characters completely wrong like making Light some bullied loser kid with highlights while in the anime he's a turbo Chad who's admired by everyone. Also the trailer makes it look like some action movie
Yeah except whites and asians and latinos all GENERALLY look kind of similar. Niggers look like monkeys and it throws off the aesthetic of the character.
Easton Jenkins
To be fair it's about race for some people I know some asian chicks at work that were excited about it until they saw the casting. They specifically said they were not interested in seeing it because light is male and L is black.
Nathan Sanchez
Bill? I told you that in confidence, not so you could tell everyone about it on social media.
Brody Price
It's body armor to avoid being drummed out of the industry for incompetence and generally being a hack.
Henry Diaz
they gone done fucked it up
Christian Rodriguez
Niggers are so disgusting
Jeremiah Martinez
Let's be real here. The reason nobody believes L can be black is because blacks are nowhere near that smart.
A smart British-Indian L, MAYBE. Now an Isreali Ashkenazi L, that's right on the money.
Jacob Turner
Difference is literally nobody wanted this shit in the first place
Wyatt Adams
>No idea who that was My sides. Great response on the spot by that guy. I don't hate black people any more than I hate most people but that guy is a piece of shit. It'd be one thing if he'd actually been funny in his interruption but it just ended up being awkward and retardedly obnoxious. The fact that the SUBSTITUTE for the actual winner shut him down with that one liner was just fucking perfect.
Colton Young
>because light is male
Colton Hughes
Changing L's race is fucking nothing compared to every other massive problem this turd has. Not to mention, remakes in general are pretty stupid.
Colton Green
will netflix redo their ranking system again like they did for amy "the whale" schumer?
Henry Nguyen
>light is male opposed to a girl or transgender dwarf
Hunter Gomez
>ghostbusters >whitewashing
Carson Nguyen
An Israeli L wouldn't be outsmarted by a goy.
Aaron Brown
tbf, unlike the majority of alfirmative action nominations/ wins, Atlanta was genuinely by far the best comedy that year.
Wyatt Peterson
so Dark Towers all over again?
William Bailey
>NO ONE WOULD COMPLAIN A WHITE MAN PLAYS ANOTHER RACE ROLE are you fucking joking Lee?
Aiden Lopez
>“Chinese remakes of Korean films aren’t expected to have Korean actors. There was a Japanese remake of ‘Sideways,’ and no one would complain that it doesn’t star a Caucasian person." Well, duh?
How many fucking Caucasian nip actors do you fucking know? >Chinese and Koreans aren't just "Asians," now that it's convenient, but are SPECIFICALLY "Chinese," and "Korean." Funny that, eh?
But that's the thing: America, and Hollywood in particular, is filled with Asians, Caucasians, African-Americans, Indians, etc. You have no fucking excuse for not casting an Asian character with an Asian actor. Japan does. Because no white actors fucking live there in their tiny-ass movie scene.
Matthew Edwards
>The whole thing feels like the pilot episode of a third-rate comic-book vigilante TV show. savage
Eli Rodriguez
>near homogeneous countries people expect the actors to be their ethnicity because it's basically all they have available when it comes to experienced actors, therefore it's fine to not cast characters according to their race in a non-homogeneous country even if you have an actor pool that could easily accommodate for it literally retarded
Leo Russell
A million black guys in the world and they choose that guy.
Jayden Sanchez
I envision most fans teens specific like L and Raito for their smexyness and le quirky zany ebil personalities (read avarage animoo character)
>Cast some dindu >Alienate your fans
Ok then...
Should've cast some androgynous white male in my opinion
Benjamin King
>now they're going to blame it on the "whitewashing controversy" Good. That stupid casting choice warned everybody that pushing their agenda was their actual goal, not making a good adaptation.
Michael Stewart
So people should care because there's more POC in the American film scene?
Being an actor is a choice, if they're not getting the roles then fuck off and do another job.
Dominic Perry
This. NO ONE wanted this to get made. Only exception might be some retarded normie "weebs", but that's it.
As someone who doesn't browse Sup Forums and only clicked here cause I saw death note, I didn't understand what happened when there was cheering/ laughter, and I didn't understand what happened when the guy said he didn't know who that was. I see now the context is like a Kanye thing, but I was just confused and lukewarm watching it...
Luis Campbell
>A smart British-Indian L
That's fucking worse. Just cast a guy who looks autistic and smart at the same time. It's fucking easy.
Landon Watson
I guess Lee will just have to.... Hold that 'L'
Bentley Kelly
So an Indian.
Benjamin Robinson
I am fine with them casting a black L but this right here isn't L. L doesn't make loud public speeches. This shit is a turd.
Gabriel Smith
So, it's actually an accurate casting?
Nicholas Bennett
I don't get it at all, could someone explain it?
Jose Wilson
I forgot doesn't shit in the street.
Jordan Baker
Light Yagami falls in love with L Lawliet.
Unable to confess, he is gifted by the shinigami Ryuk with the boy's phone number. The Desu No. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls him, and is overjoyed to find out that he has a crush on him as well.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the master detective, he only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the boy he called is not the same boy he fell in love with. In fact, he doesn't exist in this universe at all. He is L's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of his crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of JUSTICE.
Jason Johnson
Light is supposed to be male, wtf?
Hunter Watson
...
Easton Perry
Am i too edgy to think that Light literally did nothing wrong?
Crime would be obsolete if he continued his work.
Samuel Morris
He was literally eugenics at work, clearing out the degenerates from the gene pool.
Brody Jenkins
The irony is that Spike Lee is the first one to cry and whine about something being "whitewashed" usually and no it's ok to use black and caucasian actors to adapt a japanese story and if you complain about it, you're a racist
Logan Fisher
It's not Spike Lee you fucking dolt
Chase Stewart
The casting is all sorts of wrong, even Light looks like a wimp instead a narcissistic genius prick
Christian Carter
>there are no black people in Britain Sup Forums please go
Angel Young
>there are people who aren't excited to watch light turner and his fairy odd shinigami
Gabriel Clark
Have fun defending flops made by hacks because muh bogeyman
Julian Perez
ok then its fine because asians don't live in UK?
Elijah Williams
I'm not defending it. I haven't even seen it. I'm just saying you're retarded and you should go back to Sup Forums regardless.
Zachary Harris
>Am i too edgy to think that Light literally did nothing wrong? He killed innocents, policemen and L.
He put his plan into motion solely because of his superiority complex.
His plan was absolutely pants-on-head retarded, as he: 1) Only could kill the perpetrators whose identity was discovered. There are two problems with this: firstly, once a criminal's identity is discovered and published, he's basically done for. The police is very good at tracking people. Secondly, as long as a criminal's identity is not discovered, he's getting away scot-free, Light's plan being in motion or not. And what then? That means he is not actually helping in battling crime.
2) The police makes mistakes. That's why we have courts - they exist to confirm the criminal's guilt or the lack of it. With Light indiscriminately killing people the police is searching after, he would have killed many innocents.
3) Light is going to croak, sooner or later. And what then? Do you think people won't notice that perps are suddenly not dying? What's going to happen with Light's little cult once they realize their god left? He's just setting the stage for a torrent of shit in 60 years at most.
4) Light's "crime-prevention" relies on deterrence. There's a big problem with that, even ignoring the fact that Light's plan is not good at deterrence (as per point 1). And that problem is that most of the violent crimes are committed impulsively, without planning. That is, without the criminal meditating on the possible consequences. A majority of assaults and murders are committed in the heat of the moment, and out of a personal motive (with the added complication that personal motives seriously distort the decision-making process, that is, they distort the risk/reward equation that deterrence relies on.). That makes deterrence at all not as effective at preventing crime as you would assume.
Light is not going to destroy crime. All he's doing is satisfying his superiority complex.
Andrew Rogers
Addendum: the anime/manga is really shitty. I can't see why they would wish to adapt it.
Levi Lopez
I cringed so hard I lost a teeth.
Sebastian Sullivan
>Light is male You are full of shit.
Caleb Carter
>Believing this
The movie probably just really sucks.
Thomas Parker
shouldve cast zac efron as light desu
Matthew Williams
They specifically said they were looking for white men for the role. What's worse is that they chose the most ugliest one in existence and mischaracterized the character.
Juan Adams
Was he trying to do a Kanye thing?
Grayson Gomez
>Lee >Must be Spike Lee
Average Sup Forumstard everybody!
Robert Green
I don't know why you guys are bitching about L, when it was clear from the trailer that Light's character was the one being completely butchered.
Samuel Campbell
A lot of the people Light killed were probably were just too poor to afford a good lawyer. Plus he was going to go after people he felt were unfit for society which could be anyone.
Adam Rogers
If the movie is good most people will gove it a pass. But Death note is a mess to begin with, so a westerner movie is guaranteed to be even worse.
Carson Murphy
another thing is that japan has a 99% conviction rate because the police often coerce innocent people into signing a confession
Austin Bell
Because Sup Forumstards can't see beyond race. The whole point of Light's character was that he wasn't someone who you would think would do this. He was popular, smart, and an upstanding citizen. Someone who you would least expect like Ted Bundy for example. In this remake he is an ugly school shooter.
Anyone just blaming L being black and avoiding Light being mischaracterized hasn't read the manga or watched the anime. They just want to complain about the fact that some black man being on tv.
Thomas Peterson
>that some black man is on tv
David Bailey
This.
It's why I was so against his actions. It's easy to think anyone arrested is automatically guilty, but that's not always the case. There are a lot of politics and money involved.
Zachary Flores
>YMS Put the dog down adam, animals can't consent
Aiden Adams
>because a character is black instead of white who's supposed to be japanese, the movie is terrible
you people don't know how ridiculous you sound.
Adam Rodriguez
the biggest problem i have with L is that public press conference he does revealing half his face to everyone and not even using a voice changer, i liked how L was a role that could be passed on if the original died, but in this if L dies you'd know the new guy is a fake L right away
Henry Hall
People complaining about whitewashing or forced diversity in this film need to go neck themselves. He's exactly right, if you're gonna adapt something for another market, it makes sense to change the country and therefore the characters. The issue was when they used to take minority roles and give them to white people, thus preventing minorities from getting into the industry. But that really rarely happens anymore. No one complained when Disney set Aladdin in the middle-east. There are countless examples in the 90s and early 00s of characters' races being changed without any controversy.
If you care, you've literally been brainwashed by the mainstream to care about identity politics. Congratulations. What people should rightfully care about is that it looks like Light is now some anti-hero who's killing bullies with his hot strong independent girlfriend that he loves. That's a complete bastardisation of the original story. Also keeping the name "Light" in America was fucking retarded
Aaron Long
THIS
Race doesn't even play a major factor in the series. It's all about character development and execution. If the remake gets these things wrong, then it's going to be shit.
Brody Price
>blacks are no where near that smart
in any case, they're smarter than you.
Brayden Sanchez
I don't even mind L being black or changes to the story so much I mean it's the burger remake so whatever but just look at this youtube.com/watch?v=Z1mcQ6CzXo8 The acting and dialogue is just so... flat....
>When asked about L's ethnicity, creator of the series Tsugumi Ohba responded, "I think of him as a quarter Japanese, a quarter English, a quarter Russian, a quarter French or Italian, like that." Ohba said that L is the most intelligent character in the entire Death Note series because "the plot requires it."
Jordan Carter
>giving a cult favourite to someone with no interest in the source material Always a good idea
