Basically, when it was formed in 1397 just after the black death, Denmark was in absolute control of the union. Neither Sweden nor Norway liked this. Sweden was eventually able to break free, but Norway was unable until 1814 when Denmark-Norway was on the losing side of the Napoleonic wars.

If Napoleon actually won the wars, Denmark would not have been forced to give Norway over to Sweden as a "spoil of war" as they did, like a piece of meat, but rather stay in a union. For how long the Dano-Norwegian union would have continued is guesswork, but I'd wager the union would be dissolved either just before, during or directly after WW1, given the geopolitical landscape at the time.
