About 15,000 of those unable to pay the ransom that Saladin demanded as a condition for those captured in Jerusalem being set free were sold into slavery. Balian of Ibelin also had leverage over Saladin, having threatened to kill 5,000 Muslim hostages if safe quarter were not provided for the Christians in Jerusalem at the time. Well the reason they were excommunicated was that they were told by the venetians to sack a christian city in order to pay for their boats to go to the holy land. They were promised payment by a Nobleman wanting to become emperor, and helped but, but said nobleman was almost instantly dethroned before he could pay them, so they just took what they wanted, it's so stupid.
