Im interested as well as I plan on moving back to Spain in a year.

They were a basque nationalist separatist group that was born during the times of Franco. During Franco's rule of Spain centralism was implemented in its most repressive form and regions like the Basque lands, Catalonia and Galicia had signed a Statue of Autonomy during the times of the Second Republic. The inception of extremist terrorist groups was a common occurrence during Franco's regime such as GRAPO or MIL, but ETA was kind of special because they grounded their ideology on Marxism and the old traditional basque nationalism (which is extremely authoritarian and conservative by nature). The thing with ETA was that they actually had a lot of sympathizers throughout the country due mostly because of the successful assassination of Carrero Blanco, who was Franco's right hand man and successor. Some conspiracy theories exist which suggest that at one point during the dictatorship the government had the opportunity of wiping out ETA for good but they decided not to, so as to have fear on their side in the following years of transition between the Dictatorship and the new Democratic government. This theory was actually made into film its called "El Lobo" with Eduardo Noriega as the main actor, if you are interested about ETA I recommend you watch it.

Like Hamas but without the full support of the Basques. They made a coupe good hits last century (managed to assasinate Franco's appointed succesor). But since then thay have been in decline. Nowadays they are a lot quieter and I doubt most Spaniard youngsters even know about them.

Anyway after Franco's death, ETA started to escalate the violence against authority mainly police officers, guardia civil and politicians but they also killed and kidnapped civilians. The murder of Miguel Ángel Blanco was one of the darkest episodes of the struggle, I remember when I was a kid how shocked my parents were. The problem is that after a while it seemed as though ETA had no clear purpose and with the rise of yihaddism the Spanish counter-terrorist forces were way too much for ETA to handle and the people in the basque lands became disillusioned and a big part of what was ETA before became many extremist political parties that overflowed the Basque political landscape leading to the creation of Bildu. Almost a decade later ETA declared a cease fire and a year later it was dissolved.

Tensions still exist as of today because many people who once belonged to a group that used terror and murder to achieve its goals are now free to walk the streets and organize themselves in political parties that are basically racist and xenophobic not only to spaniards but most of the latin foreigners as well. They act like SJWs but deep down are ultra red pill nationalists.

What is funny of all this is that all the nationalist images, culture and raison d'etre are actually an amalgam of old Carlist ideologies and basque regionalism more than a century old and it all originated from Navarra (as Euskera itself originates from there not from Euskadi).

If you can live anywhere, the north is one the quietest and more immigrant free zones of the peninsula. Asturias is quite comfy, so are Galicia and Cantabria. Job wise the Basque lands are one of the most industrially developed parts of the country as well as Madrid or Barcelona. Madrid is not that bad tbqh but if I were you I would go to Southern Galicia, but I'm quite biased since I'm from there.

I have time to get fluent in it before we move there. My spanish is more like beaner spanish so I got rosetta stone. I find that I remember it more than I thought I would.

Spanish is not hard to learn and if your ear is already accustomed to the accent and our particular way of speaking then I imagine it will all come back relatively easy. When you are able to master both of them you will probably have more chances pf getting work compared to a regular spaniard since we are basically language illiterates. It depends. In rural places sometimes the elderly people speak broken spanish.

They aimed for the independency of the basque country being political-paramilitar movement created during the franquist represive era on the basque country and basque people.

At the beginning they aimed for political targets, police and militars that supports the status quo of the regime but at the end they just ended killing civilians in a nonsense way.

Also, during the 80's Spanish goverment pushed drug flow to annihilate the revolucionary basque youth, kind of similar the americans did with the blacks. ETA fought against this drug dealers and tried with almost no luck to keep the drugs out the street. It's my favorite anecdote of all this, the goverment being caught smuggling drugs via top police heads and well, nothing happens. The goverment also created death squads to fight ETA, they were called GAL and fought a dirt war, making extra judicial executions. There was a notorius case were some dudes were just traveling and got mistaken by ETA members, they were apparently tortured, which has been an ongoing problem in this part of the country, and just dissappeared. They are still remembered.

They still have some support on the streets, but the general apathetic civilians, the sistematic dumbing down, the continuous drug influx and well, this sad way of life kills any revolutionary and fighting will or wild spirit with an kind of ideals. We are just nothing but sheeps now, all of us.
