People who die trying to help deserve sympathy. If a person moved somewhere dangerous because "oh I love the culture!" or "black men are so cool!" then they deserve no sympathy.
They devoted their life to service of others literally, this isn't liberal guilt and stubbornness. They could have died the same way if they were just white guilt liberals. They devoted their lives to God and to them that meant everything. They didn't do this to make themselves look better socially, they did this in service of the community and God. To compare these women to the social conscious hive minded liberals of today is disrespectful. They didn't do this to prove a point and further an agenda, they did it because they thought it was right.
To what end, though? Did they actually make that part of Mississippi better? By all accounts, it still appears to be a shithole.
Which is to say, they probably would have done more good by going to Moldova or somewhere with similar poverty, but greater human potential for improvement.

Sorry to but in, but the article clearly states the ladies were down there because of 'racism.' They weren't there for whites, many of whom in MS are working or middle class. Sure, people are rural and rough, but they work for a living and don't want anything from anyone if they can't get it themselves. The ladies were there for black people. I doubt they'd have turned away whites, but the whites weren't their target pets.
The town they based themselves in was something like 90% black. Mississippi is majority-white, but they weren't interested in that.
