They are mega global now. It is in Stockholm yes - I went there a couple of times. Since about 2010 when they launched in the US they have a lot more 'American' influence in there business.

I joined early on when there was around 350 employees in the whole company and they were only in about 12 European countries. There was a massive push to launch in as many countries (markets) as they could over the next few years. (2010--14).

US/CA were favoured due to the size and potential.

A great deal of funding rounds happened and they rolled out many other markets rapidly hiring and launching.

I felt that the 'organic typically swedish all inclusive progressive hipster cool' business mindset slowly took a backseat when more americans were hired and it became more of a ruthless mega corporate machine.

That being said there were a lot of great people and I still love Spotify.

They really do headhunt the best people in every aspect of what they do.

How much do artists get paid from it? Like for example how much would a popular artist like Drake be making just from streams alone?

The money usually goes to the labels, right holders and aggregators who then distribute it to the artists as I recall.

It is possible things have changed since I left.

I always thought the fairest way to do it would be to split the individual subscription fee down per what you listened to instead of it going in to the wider pot benefiting only the bigger names.

You pay $10

$3 goes to Spotify
$7 is divided in to exactly what you have listened to that month.

So if you only listened to one band that hardly gets any streams eg 'Skullfucking Death Squad' they would get the whole $7 dollars instead of a few cents whilst the lions share goes to Taylor Swift and Kanye
