They're very active in Canada, in Quebec and Montreal. The Rizzuto family ruled Montreal for decades but the family was wiped out over the past 5 years or so. Vito Rizzuto was a very powerful don that kept the peace between bikers, wops, and all the gangs. I'm not sure who's in charge since he died.

The difference between other ethnic gangs is that the Italians structure their gang like a secret society, with rituals and codes and such. The only direct comparable is Chinese Triads who do the same. The chinks are used to secret societies because they always existed to overthrow whatever the current dynasty was.

The existence of a powerful mafia seems like it's better for entrenched business interests. They have the existing customer relationships to pass on the added cost, and mafia involvement serves to keep outsiders who might cut prices or encroach upon territory out.
There used to be only a handful of pornography studios in America, all concentrated in two areas and all of whom pretty much knew each other. The barrier to entry was having the mob protect you, stock your product in their store & theaters, etc. If they didn't want your business, they could ruin you. If you cut deals around them, you'd wind up dead.
I'm curious if technology would have been enough to end-run around them. While the producers of porn can be anonymous, the actors can't. I can't imagine tube sites ever would have functioned for long if the risk was slow, painful and certain death.

Yeah I think Sup Forums is confusing movies romanticizing gangs for reality. They're all broke from broke families and they get involved in drugs and other illicit activities because they aren't capable of getting jobs for whatever reason.

The Mafia and the Triads are secret societies though. People ITT talk about the Mafia in past tense. The average person doesn't realize how big they are and how widespread, because they're so secretive.
If there's lots of chinks where you live, the Triads are there, guaranteed. The bikers know about them, but the average Aussie doesn't. There's probably Italian mafia where you live too, but you don't know about it. Because they're both secret societies.

Why doesn't the ending make sense? I figured she could've ended up with Max for a number of reasons. She might've just married for the wealth or pragmatic concerns, because noodles hurt her, or because they both loved noodles

The Godfather is a romantic drama about aristocrats more fitting in medieval times. It has a more relatable modern backdrop but the real mob isn't that based, they're scum charading as honorable men with a polished image hollywood gave them.
