Instead of using the haphazard method described in the article, why not just setup a double-blind study in which each applicant takes a Stanford-Binet I.Q. test alongside a general survey involving feelings towards those who are different ethnicity / religion than them?

Because IQ correlates strongly with income, poor people live in shitty (i.e. non-white) areas, and nothing makes one more racist than forced interaction with minorities day-in-day-out.
The 105-115 IQ liberals generally don't have to live with the consequences of the multiculturalism they espouse.
But the really high IQ people are able to incisively cut through the bullshit rationalizations of the left and recognize that conservatism is essentially correct for all of the reasons demonstrated throughout human history.

Because the lower classes have less to lose (wealth, status, jobs, social standing) than the politically correct upper classes, and are thus more willing to adopt unorthodox (yet realistic) political views.
