A social construct is what you get when most people in a society agree on a certain idea which then persists and grows independently of who holds it at any given time. If I take a Hammer, and decide to start calling it a Saw, and convince you to start calling it a Saw too, and you convince all your friends of the same, until eventually everyone in our society forgets what a "Hammer" is and calls it a Saw instead, and as such it literally BECOMES a Saw. If you ask anyone in our society what's a tool you use to smash in nails, we'd say "Oh that's a Saw!" If we dug up the relics of an ancient civilization and found their "hammers", we would call them Pre-Historic Saws.

The point is that the essence of a thing--what a person or a hand tool or even a nation "is"--is predicated by how people perceive it and define it. Culture is just another thing which can be reinterpreted and redefined. The question thus becomes: do we want to be a society which defines culture by conflict, destruction, and consumption, or by cooperation and co-dependence? I think it should be the latter, and I think the former is toxic and damaging to humanity.
