I'm not an educator so I can't say what works and what doesn't, other than from my own personal experiences

when I was a kid I hated going to school and thought it was worse than prison. I was a great student because it was expected of me at home. By the time I got to high school though and started hanging around my own friends and girls etc I couldn't have cared less about school. I still did ok but I realized towards the end of college that I actually enjoyed learning new things. Why I had never realized this earlier I don't know. But if educators can get kids excited about learning whatever they're gonna teach it would probably make the whole process easier right?

so I'm actually in school to become an educator, specifically a 3rd or 4th grade teacher, and this commercial is extremely cringe-inducing. your statement is fundamentally correct, but I'd argue against the idea that what this dude does in his class is actually effective at engaging his kids. it looks good on TV, and Microsoft probably thought it would test well with other teachers who might want to buy a PC for their classroom, but I'm very skeptical about any of that being effective for teaching. yes, you do want to get the attention of your students, but HOW you get that attention is important. rapping and drawing a self-insert egyptian (which, ancient Egypt isn't even part of fourth grade curriculum, at least not in my state) in your garbage PowerPoint comes off as excessively narcissistic and exploitive.

the best teachers I've ever had, the ones that inspired me to become a teacher, are the exact opposite of this. after a year of seeing them every day, I knew almost nothing about them or their interests or personality, but I knew they could get me in a state to really absorb the lesson. I've had the "fun" teacher, I'm sure we all have, but more often than not I'd struggle in their class and would have more to say about them than what they taught, and it goes without saying how worthless that experience is
