Why didn't Illyrio Mopatis just sell the dragon eggs and buy the golden company for Viserys to begin retaking Westeros?
Why didn't Illyrio Mopatis just sell the dragon eggs and buy the golden company for Viserys to begin retaking Westeros?
Because he was illyterate.
Nobody had managed to hatch a dragon egg for a hundred years. The eggs givrn to Dany had already turned to stone anyway iirc.
>golden company
>hands of gold
>a woman's hands are warm
>cersei is going to jack off an elephant and die from the cumsplosion
Where did he get those eggs anyway???
IDK my BFF Jill?
He is actually Bran. All part of the plan.
All part of the Bran.
They were still incredibly expensive heirlooms. Viserys said it himself that one egg could buy him a fleet, two eggs could buy him enough men to fight and three could buy him an army.
If Illyrio gave them away freely to Drogo, why couldn't he afford to buy an army for Viserys?
Jesus Christ what made you think of that
>Le epic woodworking actor man
Reddit ftw!
I was horny.
What's his endgame?
20k mercs isn't enough to take Westeros.
He bought a relationship with them rather than an army. I mean he's never come back but theoretically they owe him a great deal.
'no'
it's a different actor
>golden company
>enough to retake an entire continent
showfags pls
>Viserys
How would he know the market value of fossilized eggs? It was more than likely more bullshit Illyrio told him.
Because then /ourguy/ wouldn't have a flying ice dragon
Aegon begins his conquest with just the Golden Company in the books, the idea being that he'll be able to get other Houses to rally to his cause.
if they had lucky timing and landed in Dorne right after Renly's death it's possible
It would be enough to retake an ill-prepared Dragonstone from Stannis. Or any coastal city or castle. From there Viserys could gather support for House Targaryen with other lords (potentially even marrying his sister off to someone other than a goatfucking savage) and strike at King's Landing while everyone is stabbing themselves in the back.
Post Jill's tits.
>kids these days
It isn't even an old meme.
>hiring mercs ever
He read Machiavelli
Shut up, grandpa. Go play with your fingerbox.
The Golden Company have a perfect reputation for never breaking a contract though
Didn't he marry a female Blackfyre? They probably given them out to every Valyrian just in case one hatches.
They might change their tune after getting roasted to death by dragons
he's talking about viserys hiring them
in this case if there were dragons on the battlefield, they'd be on their side
Are they related?
>Viserys being smart enough to do any of this
Illyrio (and Varys) understood that Viserys was never going to be King, they were placing all their bets on Daenarys pretty much as soon as it became clear that Viserys was retarded. I don't know if Illyrio and Varys knew the eggs still had a chance of hatching, but they certainly planned to have Daenarys be the Targ to retake the Iron Throne.
>fatcat warmonger from some shitstain republic in charge of something like that
The Gods made him, basically
that's literally happening in the books atm
The Golden Company was founded by a Blackfyre who were the enemies of the Targs. No way in hell The Golden Company would back a Targ not for all the money in the world.
and yet they're backing aegon. most of them just want land in westeros
>If Illyrio gave them away freely to Drogo
Probably part of their usual "bribe the dothraki so they go away" thing they had going on
He makes Drogo happier and it helped move along the plan to put Viserys on the throne, two birds one stone sort of thing
JonCon nearly became captain before he faked his death and he was literally gay for Targ cock
viserys was too much of a prick for this to work. Do you really think that if the Targaryans had returned any of GoT would have happened? Jon Arryn isn't going to be looking into parentage while theres a war on now is he?
The golden company wouldn't work for a (real) Targaryen
the plan was
>have crazy Viserys land in Westeros with his army of horsenigger savages to soften up Westerosi defenses and create political chaos
>Send in "Aegon" with the Golden Company (Who are mostly Westerosi) to save the day by cleaning up what's left of the Dothraki and take King's Landing with good PR
>Blackfyres win
That's after the War of the Five Kings which more or less took the place of the original plan of sending in the Dothraki
why was Varys pushing Robert to assassinate Dany then?
Could pre-eclipse Band of the Hawk take Westeros if they were hired by Viserys?
have you even read the books?
>“I admire your powers of persuasion,” Tyrion told Illyrio. “How did you convince the Golden Company to take up the cause of our sweet queen when they have spent so much of their history fighting against the Targaryens?” Illyrio brushed away the objection as if it were a fly. “Black or red, a dragon is still a dragon.
The only context they would support Dany is if she married Aegon, who is a BFS.
I doubt Varys seriously wanted her dead. He did go out of his way to warn Jorah that assassins were after Dany.
You have to remember that Varys plays a part. It would look really suspicious if he was trying to talk Robert out of killing Dany.
This actually seems really plausible to me.
They were going to support Dany before Aegon revealed himself to them, because in Illiyrio's words, a dragon is still a dragon.
Dany took too long to get out of Mereen however.
>He did go out of his way to warn Jorah that assassins were after Dany
Jorah was part of it. He had to make sure Dany was in the right place at the right time.
Jorah also was warned in time to stop the killing.
If Varys wanted Dany seriously dead, he could have just not written Jorah or told him to stop "accidentally" after the thing was done. Varys and Illyrio don't strike me as the types to waste a valuable asset like Dany unless they really had to.
dany die = khal willing to cross and attack
The golden company won't have a lick of gold on their armor/tabard designs in the show, will they? It's all black/grey/brown from here on out.
>Hire assassin
>Tell agent to stop assassination
How does that make sense when he could just have told Robert that the assassination attempt failed without doing anything?
Dany became an issue when Viserys followed her east instead of staying in Pentos like he was supposed to. Viserys was more important than Dany and Varys/Illyrio most likely assumed he was going to get himself killed.
We've already seen them technically. Didn't Stannis hire a bunch of Golden Company before he went to castle black?
> I don't know if Illyrio and Varys knew the eggs still had a chance of hatching,
The only thing I can think of, is that Illyrio and Varys knew (thought) the eggs were fake and thus weren't really valuable, otherwise they'd have never given them away to Daenerys, because…
> but they certainly planned to have Daenarys be the Targ to retake the Iron Throne.
No, clearly Viserys and Daenerys were bait, moving targets to keep Robert's attention on them, thus providing cover for Aegon (Blackfyre) the Reconqueror to grow up and be trained by Jon Connington & Co.
Viserys was allowed to go off with Drogo's khalasar even though everybody knew he was utterly incompetent and would probably get himself killed or at least fuck up any supposed plan to recruit the Dothraki and marrying Daenerys off to Carl Drogo doesn't help Illyrio and Varys, if she was intended assume the Iron Throne.
Aegon on the Iron Throne was always their goal, because the odds are good that Varys is a Blackfyre himself and his (deceased) sister was Illyrio’s wife Serra and Aegon is their son.
>No way in hell The Golden Company would back a Targ not for all the money in the world.
Red or Black, a dragon is a dragon.
Particularly after decades of being outcasts and with the death of Maelys Blackfyre apparently rendering the dynasty extinct.
Those were the Stormcrows. Davos suggests hiring the Golden Company but Stannis dismisses the idea.
There are more Dothraki than there are men in the Golden Company, and the Golden Company is not large enough to take Westeros on its own or someone would've paid them to do it already.
Westeros is the most developed part of the world and the most dangerous when its unified. Cersei was relying on the Company to bolster her preexisting numbers, not win her the entire war. Additionally, a mercenary company might just take the eggs and then not go to Westeros since there'd be no one to stop them, it's not like Viserys had any way of ensuring they'd listen, and there'd be no real penalty for them just taking them and leaving since Mopatis can't guarantee they'll listen either. You hire mercenaries to bolster an army, not just be your army, since there's nothing stopping them from just leaving once you pay them. If you have your own army you can make them stay since if you win you'll go after them next so they are essentially obligated to stay. No one cared about the Targs at that point enough to take issue with the Company fucking them over. Getting Drogo to fall in love with Dany and doing what she asked for her was a far safer bet.
It's like you people need everything spelled out for you, then you get upset when the show does exactly that.
Alright I concede the point.
The Aegon Blackfyre angle makes the most sense.
Maybe normal mercs, but not the golden company, that's their defining feature in ASOIAF
That's a 2 part plan, that involves players beyond the mercenaries. You can't just hire the golden company and then show up, you'll only unify the houses against you. Mopatis cant predict the future and tell there'd be a 5 way civil war, he made the best option at the time. And it worked pretty well too since Dany is at Westeros and the dothraki are assfucking the Lannisters right now.
>the Golden Company is not large enough to take Westeros on its own or someone would've paid them to do it already.
Plus they tried and failed twice already
>Westeros is the most developed part of the world
No it isn't, Westeros is the boonies compared to the Free Cities, Ghis, Asshai, etc.
When it comes to tech and war they're definitely way up there, just like medieval Europe. They have the best armor, the best weapons, and the best siege equipment. The only reason they're losing against Dany is because it's a 3 way fight immediately after a 5 way fight.
>Ghis
top kek. Ghis is nothing more than the remnants of a greater empire. As of the time of the books it's a shithole who's sole trade is slaves.
refer to Also the golden company's defining trait is that they never break their contract. If you hire them, they're not just going to run away with your money. They have a very important reputation to uphold and thus charge a much higher fee than other mecenaries do.
Because he was plotting with Jon Coddington to have the mummer's dragon, Aegon Targaryen, lead the Golden Company to Dany's side, marry her, and set him up for life
>Best Weapons
The Myr have fucking hand-held reloading crossbows with an effective range matching a longbow. The Braavosi use rapiers, which might not be "better" than a long sword but definitely require more technique to create and are harder to master. All the free cities have navies that make Westeros look like a fucking joke. All lenses and scientific equipment used by the Maesters comes from Myr.
In the books the Free Cities are basically Rennaisance level while Westeros is still high medieval. The only reason that Westeros hasn't been btfo by a free city is because they constantly fight eachother and they have much smaller populations.
Aside from that, the show Dothraki being able to beat the Lannisters is just bad writing. Jorah comments at one point that the Dothraki's only hope would be to outnumber the Westerosi troops, which the show Dothraki do not. They also should not have any ability to take castles like at all.
LOL who is this guy? I know where Westeros is, I recognize dragons, but who's the golden company? Wait, is that the company Cersei is buying? LOL WHY WOULD THEY FIGHT FOR KHALEESI THEN?
> They have the best armor, the best weapons, and the best siege equipment.
Westerosi have a well developed feudal military but Volantis has a huge standing professional (slave) army and all the tech in Westeros came to it from Essos, such as the “Myrish eye” (telescope) Jon uses to look at Mance Rayder’s camp outside the Wall.
Westeros is the medieval Ireland to Essos’ Byzantium.
> Ghis is nothing more than the remnants of a greater empire.
Indeed, at a time when the Westerosi were nothing more then fur clad savages. Essos is the advanced civilized part of Planetos with a long and storied history, while Westeros is the backwoods frontier.
Kingslanding, the largest city in Westeros would be just a suburb of Volantis.
Jaime was still winning against Danny's entire army until she took the dragons to the field and attacked a supply convoy not preparing for a fight. He outwitted her at almost every turn until she called for an armistice. The only reason he lost their final altercation is she came in with magic nukes and attacked an unprepared force and burned their shit. Dany's entire collective army of 3 free cities and the Dothraki are only going to win because as jaime says they're not unified as one kingdom at the moment, a sentiment Robert shared with Cersei when he explained they'd lose because Dany would be one ruler under which everyone would fight and die for whereas Westeros is almost never that coordinated. If the entirety of Westeros put aside their differences no one free city would be able to take them.
North of the Wall = Iron Age
Ghis = Classical Era
Westeros = Medieval Era
Free Cities = Renaissance
The show splicity said that the Golden Company has only 10.000 man.
This was retconned. On the last episode Cersei said she got 20.000 man, basically they jumped the shark again to make her fill the spot that Aegon has on the books.
I thought she said she got 20,000 men, horses and elephants but it wouldn't surprise me if they retconned that.
North of the Wall = N.American Frontier
Ghis = Egypt / MidEast
Westeros = Medieval Era
Free Cities = Renaissance
>professional slave army
>professional slave
hmm thats the thing that made me think the most ive ever thought
North of the Wall isn't even Iron age, the only free folk that actually have any kind of metallurgy are the Thenn and they make their shit out of bronze
...
In fairness the only time we've ever actually seen the Dothraki fight Westerosi soldiers is during loot train battle, when they had a dragon on their side and terrain that perfectly favored them.
It wasn't even a battle, it was more of a rout. Though Jaime does seem certain that even without the dragons the Dothraki would btfo them.
maybe jaime's just an idiot?
and how did that work out for the sultan (^;
The Golden Company's entire thing is that don't break a contract.
>pic
bobby would've gmaul rushed him
>Black or red, a dragon is still a dragon.
Jesus he confirmed the Blackfyre theory right there.
No they just don't have the numbers. Robert says in S1 that the dothraki will ride from town to town raping everything from women to dogs and burning every house down and without coming together the 5 kingdoms that comprise Westeros would never have the manpower to stop them, so eventually the smallfolk would agree to let Dany be queen and after that it'd be a matter of starving them out in their keeps.
If they hadn't just endured a major war that left half the country dead and the remaining half now split from the North they'd be fine. Nobody even knows whose in charge anymore. The Freys' army is probably killing itself with infighting right now since that entire house is dead too. Highgarden just got wiped out and Dorne is probably in a civil war of its own right now since there aren't Martells anymore either.
>No they just don't have the numbers.
When Cersei says she'll hire mercenaries, Jaime still counters that the Dothraki would fuck them up.
He seems to imply it's due to how strong they are at battle, not just numbers.
Did he ever actually respond to that? I only remember him saying he didn't understand how a company in Essos would help them, and then shocked that she was willing to trust Euron and not tell him. He leaves before commenting further on the company doesn't he?
wasn't it established that dothraki can't do shit to a man in westerosi armor (or their curved blades at least)?
i figured the comment amount the lannisters getting picked off like flies was because their morale was shattered by drogon, but why does it seem like the dothraki are formidable aside from their numbers now?
I'm pretty sure he just used them to ensure that the Dothraki backed Dany. He doesn't want Dany and Viserys to actually win the Throne in Westeros.
He pretty much just gave them a giant horde of savages so that Viserys and would go to Westeros and ravage the lands while the War of Five Kings split Westeros. That was "Aegon" could swoop in, save the day, and be crowned King.
So how big is danys dothraki army anyway? if its anything close to drogos, theres already 40000 dothraki on the continent raping the shit out of everyone and looting everything they can just, since dany bought lots of soldiers, but no farmers?
It's all the Dothraki isn't it, not just one Kahl's? There's at least 1-200,000.
She's also go I think 50-100,000 Unsullied, and then her navy from the free cities.
Nigga its common knowledge that Aegor is a blackfyre shit
the only thing the dothraki can realistically be good at is running down a bunch of disorganized peasants, their gay sickles couldnt probably cut through a gambeson let alone mail or plate
they dont even have a fucking spear on horseback which is simply pure retardation
>AN HISTORY
...
Pretty much this
It's not the Dothraki's numbers that are the problem. It's that they're an entirely cavalry based army fighting against a style of warfare that basically just amounted to smashing peasants against each other and then hiding in your castle if you lost.
There's a reason Genghis Khan made one of the largest empires in human history and it wasn't because he was an especially good commander.
>50-100,000 Unsullied
way less than that, dany bought 8600. Probably has ~7000 remaining. Also 200,000 dothraki includes non-fighters, probably only 60,000 fighters
and she's currently able to house and feed all these people in dragonstone?
Dothraki loot what they need. That's how mongols operate. They take what they want and leave what they don't but rape it before they leave.
um sweetie when youre a yass queen you dont have to worry about logistics :)
Viserys had already tried to hire the Golden Company. He threw a big feast for their commanders, then at the end they told him to fuck off. They were happy to eat his food and drink his wine, but that'd never work for a Targaryen.
except dragonstone was abandoned, and dany is trying build goodwill, so her army of darkies raping every westerosi within 100 miles and taking their food might sour the peoples opinions of her
yes, just turn ur brain off lmaoooo
they should've at least done a scene of her disciplining dothraki for raping/pillaging or showing some kind of internal dissent. Even if they think you're some kind of god, thousands of years of the same lifestyle don't disappear without a fight
Not if they're dead. Then you blame it on the Lannisters and say it'll keep happening until they're off the throne. Some really fucked up shit is happening behind the scenes of Dany's empire, but she's too busy sucking Jon's dick on a boat to care about it right now.
